Hmm, after further thought I should clarify somethings. I have read elsewhere of proposals to have both Gems, and a second set of Gems for use similar to tradebars. I think that is a terrible idea. I like the idea of using coinage, gems, tradebars, and trade goods across the board. A little creativity from the DMs and players will keep a sort of virtual economy going perhaps. I tried to run a trade route with my PC last year and there was not really a convenient way for me to organize my trip across multiple servers and DM teams and I eventually gave the idea up. I'm not real sure what the best way to achieve all this would be, however I think gems have a natural draw for wealth purposes. Maybe just have gem dealers with higher buybacks then other merchants? Not sure if we want to revisit the tradebar situation either.

If we give weight to coins please ensure the weight markers representing those coins can be stored in magical bags. It sucks to be a mage with a magical bag, walking around town at 25% speed because of the gold coins recieved from turning in a few gems, so that you can actually shop at other stores.

Hm. Gem dealers doesn't sound good at all to me. I'm not sure how this should be solved though..

 One idea could be to have banks that lock up your gems and gold and issue a paper with a seal that can be exchanged for the money back. That way you don't have to carry around all your gold while in large cities at least, and when bartering with other PCs you can use gems and a magnifying glass! Ta dah! The bank would be like a merchant that only deals with gold and gems and at a 100% buy back.

How does that sound?

Good point. Either they're funded by the city, some merchant guild or they take out a small fee for their work, say for example a one time fee each time you exchange gems for gold and vice versa. How do the banks in our world get their profit? They even pay you for letting them hold your money for you. Banks in Faerûn doesn't have to be that different from real world banks. The concept of investment and moneylending is already included. It can easily be organised by someone willing.

Sounds like something a Player Character would be good at starting up, rather than have it built-in to the game. ;)
