As a mechanic to help players and show the effect of the passage of time, I believe it could be desirable to implement "auto-rest" of characters who's players are offline for extended periods.
In other words, damaged characters or characters who used up their spells would get hit points back gradually as RL hours pass while the players are away. This would ensure that between sessions, players could come back to the game with generally fully-healed, rested characters with spells memorized.
Most of our changes make the game truer to PnP, and truly, what DM insists to begin a new session with his players' characters still damaged from previous adventures in PnP? Of course, this system couldnt be abused, since technically the characters wouldnt be healing any faster than if the player just waited and hit the rest button every 53 minutes (or whatever).
NWN2: Automatic resting while offline
*raises hand*what DM insists to begin a new session with his players' characters still damaged from previous adventures in PnP?
Sometimes, RL forces us to end sessions in places where resting should not be an option. If the DM suddenly has to log off in the midst of a dungeon crawl and reschedule for next day it seems unfair that the players should benefit IC from this OOC situation.
There is also the technical issue here: this would require some kind of cross-server persistency, and I'm not sure if we will have that in NwN 2 either.
I would say that this is best left to DM discretion.

If you are in a safe place when you log off, i am all for this. I have hit the rest key with my PC once in the last 6 months, and then it was purely OOC to give me back the spells i had occasionally used over the previous few months sessions. Granted i had not been playing alot, but i figure even at once a week, my PC would have rested some point in 3 months of real time
