NWN2: Re-skinning

Post by TheCrazyGoblin »

On re-skinning:
I dont think its that we've been silent on this issue... its just that the answer has remained the same for a very very long time. There shouldnt be a problem handing over our plugins to the community that export model data for "static" type models (weapons, placables, etc..) and even for the re-skinning of animated models.

The problem is that because of some of the middleware we use to make model "skeletons" and animations its going to be difficult to give the community the power to build those kinds of assets. We're trying to think up a good solution... but it is a complicated problem and we havent had an "a ha!" moment on this one yet.
Wow.. this thread really took off.

Just thought I'd clarify that when I used the term "reskin", I meant much more than simply replacing texture maps and tweaking texture coordinates. I meant to imply the ability to completely redefine the mesh geometry (vertex offsets, bone weights, etc...) that covers a particular skeleton.

If we are able to allow you guys to do this (which I think should be possible, but no promises now), I think that would really open up a lot of CC potential. We'd provide MAX files with the skeletons and you could make the meshes.
Sounds promising!
