Welcome indeed. There is no official starting point in ALFA. You can start wherever you wish. However, I'd strongly recommend you to check the times during which the servers are usually populated and the times the DMs are usually on. The former can be figured out by checking the Gamespy or by simply...

Good to hear you have had fun. It's just that some of us really can't or don't want to play more than 2-3 hours at the time. Nothing wrong in continuing the session later but... It's just not possible to be online that long.
