Re: The Hobbit 3
I've taken my son to every LoTR and Hobbit movie. We saw it Sunday and frankly the 40 minute battle scene alone was worth the price of admission. Yes, dwarf-elf love is Hollywood cheese, but Dain on the battle boar telling an army of elves to "Sod off!" was epic.
Jackson certainly made a lot up to fill in gaps in Tolkien's narrative, but if you are a fan of the LoTR and think about his additions (other than the cheesy Hollywood love stuff) it makes sense.

pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Yeah, I made the mistake of assuming it could only get better after the last one. I had not expected this piece of trite, ridiculous, non-sensical action schlock. I went in there thinking "meh, if at least the battle scene is as epic as Helm's Deep was, I'll get my entertainment", but I simply was not emotionally involved at all in the drawn-out piece of ludicrous idiocy. Every time you were almost immersed, suddenly elves would protect pikes with their bodies (Legos showed in part II that bows are for show only anyway), or Tauriel would survive instead of throwing herself down off the precipice with Bolg. Rams appearing out of thin air are a running gag for the wife now, but she told me it made total sense they showed up - the dwarves had slotted them to their quickbars earlier.
Think it's a bit of the George Lucas problem - too much creative control and nobody willing to confront you and moderate your insanity, especially since this was basically a victory lap more than a movie. Going back to the LotR movies (especially the extended uncut blue ray extra footage blah blah thing), there are signs and portents of a contained, shall we say, mad "genius", but back then moderation and sense seems to have won out, likely because it was a project in jeopardy, not a guaranteed success.
Ah well. At least he gave us Braindead.
And next year's Christmas is safe too, when we can smugly smirk on Force Awakens.

Re: The Hobbit 3
I'm still not sure I will go see this one and as time passes I'm more and more thinking like kid. Enough of this stupid stuff.
I just hope someone will not have the stupid idea of saying: let's make a superhero film out of the Silmarillion or the Children of Hurin.
I think JRRT and or CT didn't sell the movies rights for the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales... So we should be safe here.

Re: The Hobbit 3
The problem is its a bunch of ridiculous, over-the-top, computer animated action filler. Hobbit or no, these movies are garbage more (most) often than not. Plot is nice, you know? Rather than 30 minutes of ninja barrel riding action with flipping dwarfs tip-toeing over barrels through a raging torrente.
I think thats the main problem here, boom, not nerd rage over changes to the book. These movies -- transformers and the like -- are absolute shit. They are made for cretins and 5 year olds.

Tha said, Ill see it today with the missus. It oughta meet both our expectations, which is that it is shit, so no disappointment expected. Funily enough, she has never read the books, any of them, but loved the LOTR trilogy and enjoyed the first Hobbit, as well. I guess she has taste, yay for taste.

Re: The Hobbit 3
Went to see the Hobbit tonight as a early birthday present
Bah! I think I need to force my children to read the originals
Hobbit 3 = Matrix moves with ninja elves and air drop bears
Legolas always rolls a 20 to hit and never misses a dex save, somebody needs to confiscate his dice
let alone the fact he had more scenes in the movie then Bilbo did I think .
if it wasn't about a story that was the start to my fantasy reading and playing it would be great as it is
I am sorely dissappointed

If you want a truly good Hobbit / LotR experience, I can heartily recommend Cubicle 7's "The One Ring", which does a terrific job of catching the atmosphere of Tolkien's world:Arianna wrote:Went to see the Hobbit tonight as a early birthday present

It is beautiful, simple, elegant, dangerous, full of meaningful choices. It is also incredibly accessible, with a cunning focus on abstraction and narration without foregoing simulation as the main arbitration mechanic. It is also a genuine treat from art and beauty of presentation, so definitely a good piece to own in any roleplayer's collection.
Cheers,

Re: The Hobbit 3
I have not watched this yet, but…
I bet I like it better than all three movies.
It is an edit to turn the entire hobbit trilogy into one four hour movie.

Two more cuts:
Both are ~3 hours each.
