bio XP

Post by Twin Axes »

Why do we give the xp for a bio only at level 2? Doesn't it make more sense to do it at level 1, to help people out of the doldrums into survivability faster?

Apparently the kickoff post reason given was "The reason we're requiring a pc to be 2nd level is to avoid watering down the level one start, and because it will reduce the effort the dm and staff teams will need to invest to accomplish the work. This means ECL pcs will have a longer wait to benefit from the policy."

I am not sure I agree with the reasoning, there are DMs around who might be pleased to log in for 30 seconds to award 250 and then take another minute making sure there's a bio post and a notation that 250 already awarded... whether it was for a ten minute old level 1 PC, or a week old level 2 PC.

There are however some other "perks" to level 1 play here and there, I think in BG, HEEGZ still may have some idea where he's willing to work with regional starting gear rather than whatever a start merchant might sell? Not quite sure, though I think he's also moving house and home at moment... maybe other teammates of his share his philosophy on point.

Good luck with the new PC!

HEEGZ has made a policy of finding a way to justify the regional gear given to level 1s per the Forgotten Realms materials.

It tends to be a masterwork weapon or armor.

Thanks, my "xp for bio" search didn't turn up that post.

Yep, got one of those, I love it. Anything to personalise your PC already from the start is great.

I was told its bad luck to write a bio at level 1. It's tempting fate anyway

Hah! Well I've been known to do that.

You can check the BG house rules for my DMing preferences. I also implement them on other servers, with exceptions for those policies that clash directly. If you have a level 1 PC hit me up for regional start equipment, after level 2 for biography XP, etc. Details in my sig.

Oh, and not moving yet, probably got another week or two free before the big move.

why do we Twin? Because people thought it was a way to skip past level 1 too fast. Grab a DM with your level one and you can get more than the bio XP in a few sessions.

pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Well yeah. My question was rhetorical in the sense that it was intended to spark a little debate on the issue, in light of the recent discussion about the issues with level discrepancies, starting at a higher level etc. With our playerbase much smaller that it used to be, many seem to feel that it this more of a problem.
