If one was peering into the home of Laird Briairbush it could easily be thought that the small forest gnome was in fact asleep, his body still on his bed...His eyes knit tightly together. They would be wrong; gravely wrong.
His heart thumped wildly in his chest as a cold sweat broke out across his flesh.
It was her. The Beast. The vision seared into his brain like she was branding him with a hot poker. Laird, was not use to this magic, this force upon his mind.
The emeralds of the beasts eyes turning his blood cold. Her rows upon rows of sharpened glistening daggers in the night. Coming ever closer to the startled gnome. A nauseating churning cloud of green smoke wisps around her maul spiraling like a fairy light.
Laird dives, his body hitting the cave floor as he tumbles bringing out his short bow as his fingers find purchase on the quivered arrow.
The glow of the magicked item no match for the scaly beasts hide, his arrow explode with a ping, once-twice-three times the perfectly shot missile is decimated.
Her green scales an impregnable fortress of despair. Laird can't help but grimace in frustration.
"Liiitttle tasssty morsel! How delightful you have paid me a visit."
Laird bolted, his body retching as he started from the vision. The gnome's panic pulsing through him like a dangerous wave of death. This wasn't a dream, he hadn't been asleep! He knew that but wished it was anyways. To be connected to her? He felt the vomit rise in his throat but held it back.
He shook his head, focusing on the magical flicker of blue light from his urns. It helped him calm his breath, reeling in the panic.
The complex he dweled in was large, haunted even, with the souls of greater men who had come before him.
The cold stone upon bare feet as he staggered to his chest. Pulling open the lid and staring down at his mask.
Sweat dripped from his brow. Wiping it with the back of his forearm he let out a sigh, reaching for it.
The forest ranger stared at the object in his hands. His knuckles turning white as he thought about his obligations and the decisions that lead him here.
He had a duty, no, an honor to uphold his sacred oath as a plague knight... Yet. Was it him? Was he still the man he was before?
Or something different now?
He yearned to see his family again.
His friends.
His forest.
It had all been simpler before.
Could he be who he was now and who he had been before?
Could he be a plague knight and still avenge his best friend Takis?
A "Y" in the road appeared before Laird.
In that moment he knew he had a decision to make...
