Turning Leaves

Post by danielmn »

The wind blew heavy off the Cloud Peaks, offering little comfort in the fading light. The snow swirled, even in the ends of Mirtul, though the ground was too warm for it to have any true effect, other than to cut to the bone at any elevation. The fear below was almost palpable, hushed whispers of what lay beyond the walls of Nashkell, and above within the dangerous slopes...a testament that mother's warnings to their children are not always fancies of the mind. Not a week before, the scouts had returned the man, worse for wear...the rumors had quickly spread that ten of the giants of the high peaks had made their way down into the valleys. Clorence shuddered to think of the fate of the ten that had not made it back...nevermind the shipments that had since failed to make it through the passes. He stared into the valley beyond from upon the wall, the last light casting an ominous glow into the farmland valley beyond. Only a matter of time, before the large ones grew bold enough. Word had been sent North, but so far, there was no reply. Not surprising, even with a ten thousand piece bounty on the large ones, one would have to be half-mad to face such odds. Clorence exhaled slowly, then made light work of the stairs. No trade from the south, meant the prices on goods, even food, had gone up drastically. As he put his bow to shoulder, he caught the pleading eyes of two, probably brother and sister. Scared and hungry....riots had started in such ways. Clorence gave them both a sad smile, and reached into his pack, removing two large parcels. He untied both the parcels, revealing nuts, berries, mushrooms and tubers. The childrens eyes went wide, and so did his smile.

"Spread these among your friends, young ones. All are in need. I will return soon with more...fear not, help will soon come."

With that, he mussed the young boys hair, then turned on his heel. It was a long trek toward Baldur's Gate, where prices were still reasonable.

<Castano>: danielnm - can you blame them?
<danielmn>: Yes,
<danielmn>: Easily.
