Pies

...

Weaver walked in like he owned the place. Which he did. Sort of. Anyhow, from over his shoulder, he deftly shrugged off a six tail of rats. Thump, onto the bloodied wood bench went the conglomerated mass of rat corpses. He eyed one of the larger rats. Clean fur, not obviously dying of disease, all digits intact. A display meal for sure. Mentally he patted himself on the back as he pushed his way through the Halfling sized swing door... into chaos.

The kitchen was in full swing. His cousins were punching huge mounds of floury dough, his uncles were stuffing the rats of yesterday into the sausage casings of today, and his aunts were picking apart watercress for the evenings soups.

“Weaver, you little prick! Get your arse on the pie line!” roared out his uncle good naturedly, flinging an apron in his direction. “No, no time for washing your hands, chop chop!” he instructed as Weaver removed the bloodied apron from his face, and tied it around himself.

“Yes chef!” yelled out Weaver as he picked up his second most favoured knife from the scarred chop block (Which one of these arses had his?) and moved to a vast collection of pies, deftly cutting vents in the top of each. Thirteen rows of thirteen pies in thirteen racks. He let his mind ponder how many that was as he moved from pie to pie, enjoying the camaraderie of the kitchen.

Slice, slice, slice – his eyes glazed over and he fell into a pie preparing trance.

SLICE...

It barely registered at first, as the incredibly sharp pastry knife cut through the pointer finger of his left hand. “Oh”, he remarked as he raised what was left of his finger to examine the stump, before promptly fainting.

That's one way to get the afternoon off.
