Twin sparks lit up the night
Full of life and laughter and joy
The first clove to the second
And shone more brightly;
Let us become one, the first said
And be a brighter light than before.
The second demurred, took a step away,
Saying, We spread more light apart.
Rebuffed, the first dimmed ever so slightly,
And couldn't help but shine, all the same.

With joyous tears and wide arms
I throw myself at you, for you are alive and whole
And without apparent harm.
Yet you stand bewildered, your memories a hole
Written on your face,
And you staggered before me
Like one out of time or place.
If only I could help you be--
The one I used to know
And the one I cared about
The one who smirked often and talked low,
The one who never raised his voice in a shout.
Alas, your mind is a sieve
And I can grant you no reprieve.

All is quiet on the river
Everything is safe in its warded bed
Come night children from cold rather than fear shiver
And nothing disturbs the rest of the dead.
Yet for all its safety and its men in silver
When all is done and said
The war stirring to the north makes the wise sober
And know that soon their confederates' land will run red.
Giants, grey dwarves and fouler beasts
Go to war with the Marches' best:
Men and women who vowed to return home only when the conflict ceased--
Would that every man and woman should be so blessed
That they should all return alive with their uniforms creased
And medals pinned to their breasts.

With a blank stare that masked burning hate
The elflady woodenly carried out her mistress' command
And the fog that settled over her mind brought to vivid recollection
Everything that a previous mistress, one of fouler bent, could demand.
Betrayed by the one she had confided in most, her own errors called to light,
She now could do nothing but inwardly seethe and remand
All of her betrayer's inquisitions to her mistress' care.

She heard her own voice flatly answer each suspicious question
And she felt her limbs move without her leave
Her tongue laid bare her soul and her spare and sparse plots--
She hatched a new one then, as she inwardly did seethe
And though she knew herself flighty and a bit vain
She knew herself motivated by the ire of one sorely--and often--aggrieved.
But could she follow this through to the end?
Could she hold true til the blade was safely sheathed?
She knew not, and thought it best perhaps not to plan too hard
And simply to do what she felt, to say what she believed.

The mind is the greatest prize of all, her mother had taught
And she had oft wondered if it applied to even her own
It seemed that again and again, it had proven precisely this which others sought.
Her body, some favored; others, her mind, knowing that the body followed,
But she was tired of being the victim, and so she fought
To master greater magics and ward herself well.
She who oft felt compulsion's release vowed--soon to repay the realms in kind,
And where she wandered, only chaos would others find.

Quietly with chains rattling
And silently with nerves jangling
The elf stilled her necklace as it swung, dangling
And stilled her heart for fear of her boot-steps tattling
On the polished stone floor as she listened to their prattling.
Many words spent and little told,
Every breath a wheedle, a needle, a dagger in mold
Damning with faint praise and truths as bald
As lies the tavern's skald
And every word proving her trust poorly sold.

Sometimes it's hard to live with a reputation
We all want people to like us
It's a silly preoccupation
And yet it twists us
Makes us people-pleasers, makes us pretend to be who we're not.

Sometimes it's hard to live with a reputation
When everyone thinks you're what you're not
It's all too easy to live the lie
When it's what they expect
And when the truth is worse, perhaps the lie is best.

Sometimes it's hard to live with a reputation
When push comes to shove
It's not who you are
It's the mask they've come to hate or love
And yet does it matter who you are, really, when all they see is a mask?

Sometimes it's hard to live with a reputation
When everyone thinks you're a whore
It's a mask, a front
Armor against your own failings
And what would they say if they knew more?

Sometimes it's hard to live with a reputation
Everyone thinks they know you
It's easy to see, to know, to feel their contempt
You're not what you say you are
But who you say you are at least hides the scars.

It was a starry night of deafening silence
And on a hilltop not so far
There lay an elfmaid
Staring at distant dreams
Fading like summer into fall
Dreams of happiness
Dreams of a care-free life
Dreams walled up behind circumstances
Hopes killed on the vine
The mortar of her iron will
The armor of her mind
In solitude were null
And in quiet grief were negated
In that still hour
Where no one else was around
No foul rumors
No triumphant smiles
No one to see her grief
No one to understand
She sobbed quietly
The loss and the loneliness won out, and
The facade came down.

Appearances are everything
In a world where deeds lie,
Where words hold more sway
Than the sword which dooms men to die.
Simple men claim, "Deeds, not words,"
And unreasoning fools think not to ask why:
The face behind the mask,
The truth behind the lie
The substance behind the illusion
The reason the defeated cry.

Simple men claim, "Deeds, not words,"
But they forget who writes history.
It is not the soldier with his spears
It is not the mothers who worry
But the sage who records his tales
And the bard who recounts lost glory.

I love the poetry. They echo with common themes effecting females in her position. It also makes me want to find Ansha some Elven Prozac.
