I've done the bad thing of comparing myself to Miss Ansha. She's so beautiful and graceful and seems to glow from within...Her laughter is like music, and the simplest words in her language come out sounding like woven rainbows. She moves like sunbeams on water, and, if you look into her eyes, it feels like you're the only one in the room. Compared to her, I'm a spotted ginger drafthorse.
Maybe that's what a lot of people have done--tried to compare themselves with her. I can see where a more insecure person would look upon her and hate her. Some surely have because I hear the vicious whispers about her in the College. She's probably heard the whispers and the names all her life, and, honestly, I don't see how she handles it. Maybe she's better than that--refusing to lower herself to childish games of popularity. Or, maybe, she views herself as better in general. There is a certain amount of pride in the Elven. Can you really blame them? We humans trudge through our life and our species never seems to rise above our brutish natures.
I think, maybe, that's the root of my insecurity around Miss Ansha. I feel like a master artist took their time with her and made a beautiful, intricate goblet while my gods threw my stuff on the potter's wheel and made a bowl. And, stupidly, I think that if I talk to her, learn about her and her people, it'll somehow rub off on me.
Everyone says I'm still growing--maybe I'll grow up to be Miss Ansha.

I miss my Momma.
I remember her saying how she'd almost gone into the ministry. Two months before she had planned to leave for Moonshadow Hall in Sembia, she, silencing the pressure of a close friend, attended a Beltane festival. There, an awkward boy with bright red hair and honest eyes shared his wine and his blanket with her. Two months later, they were wed, and Momma converted to worshipping the Earthmother. Seven months after that, Kers was born. She told us that she never had any doubt about marrying Daddy or starting a family. Her heart urged her to serve and make the world better, it just hadn't been clear on how to begin with.
I sometimes wonder what Momma would've been like if she'd never met Daddy. Would Shassra Illance have become an adventurer? Wandered the world, doing good in the name of the Moonmaiden. Would she have fallen for a fellow adventurer? Or remained single, only enjoying their company on those lonely nights the bards sing of? Would the world have dulled her outlook on life, like it seems to do to so many adventurers? Or is she where I get my stubborn cheerfulness?
Momma would be chuckling at all this. There's no 'what if' with Momma. She married, had a family, and, somewhere in there, changed her name to 'Moonbeam'. 'What is' seems to do her just fine. That, I know, I didn't get from Momma. I lay awake sometimes pondering the 'what ifs'. Somehow, sort of like her, I don't regret my decision to leave home. Like her, I feel I'm here to serve and make the world better. I'm not exactly sure how, but I'm trying.
Just, right now, I miss my Momma.
