A lot of my friends are, so I'm considering picking it up. Is it as fun as it looks?

It's really fun, but I've just played the demo.

Current speculation is that public versus games leave a lot to be desired, but eight people who know what they're doing and work together can make for one hell of an exciting game (and very difficult for the Survivors).

without other people, and without setting the difficulty at advanced or above; its tedious, repetitive and uninspiring. Even at its best, it needs more maps.
Only gets good with more people.

I will agree that the content is a bit low, but I've had a blast playing this game. I've also been fortunate to play with some good players, so I have more options to play with people who know what they're doing. I'd say, after a couple of weeks of playing, you should be able to create a fairly robust friends list of people who have similar styles.
Even so, the repitition doesn't kill this game. The maps are the same, but different things happen every time you play. You realize it pretty quick when you set up your guys thinking the ambush is going to come through a door, then zombies start dropping in from above, or come through a wall. It's different every time. The only way it gets really repititive is if you have people wanting to defend from inside a closet every time. That's just not exciting.
In my opinion, though, the endgames for the four campaigns are effin stellar.
