The Leucrotta Debacle

This isn’t a rant or a complaint, just maybe an explanation and apologies for harshness and hopefully a warning for future ventures.

First off I think Jed is a fairly cautious adventurer, or at least I try to role play at wisdom 16 , brave yes but not foolish. *

*(Of note here is my character previous to Jed , Kalo.... Kalo was anything but cautious, and he continually became more violent and chaotic, in his last months had a wicked, acidic Caustic Blade that lowered his wisdom to 8 ... he’d do crazy things always ... immediately charge boss enemies , try to smash demonic portals, chase after Vansa alone, etc. That’s not Jed , but I digress )

Second, had I known ... I would have never taken Jed to a place that had enemies that destroy weapons on his first group adventure after the plague , and actually I didn’t even know leucrottas destroy items, or forgot. He at least would have switched to his mundane sword and used a spell to enchant it .

I guess a timeline of the disaster is easiest to explain things :

(Pre) Fall 2019 - last night : Jed was 10th level and advancing slowly, he gets involved in the Plague Rat plot in March , is plagued and has strength 10 , wisdoms reduced permanently, can’t access best spells. Wearing no armor or shield he joins the long quest against to Plague Rats, in the process getting cured , gaining a level and a holy +2 bastard sword with considerable good properties.

1. Jed practices to regain his skills on wargs and wolves , ends up fighting a gray render and a wyvern , decides it better to get back into a group before dying alone.

2. I contact PA and Droomi about maybe trying a few places, nothing with Rusters or such . So , Jed goes to the LTC and Sarrena, Keryn, Caliope, and Jayden invite him to hunt manticores, to me sounded manageable for a first outing , and even 2 characters lower level than Jed , should be good practice.

3. So we go past the ogre cave fully buffed ... oh wait Jed casts and re-casts 3 bulls strength in a row that give him minimum results , costing up to +3 in discipline , which comes into play next...

4. We’re ambushed by 4 leucrotta , when I say ambush I mean immediately in the ranks, no time at all to prepare. Jed gets knocked down and beat up, he heals himself up to about 75% hp, and gets up.

5. Jed sees Sarrena , on the ground getting chewed up by two leucrotta , he casts Hammer of the Gods, killing one and stunning the other , to “near death”. Sarrena begins to retreat along with others , Jed tries to cover the withdrawal.

6. Sometime around here Jed’s prized bastard sword gets destroyed , but I don’t know it , I’m not expecting it and things are happening too fast to notice it.

7. Jed sees the others leaving at the AT , he’s a few steps behind , there’s a “near death” leucrotta in pursuit at the AT as well . I think , these monsters sometime chase into the AT, right ? It’s near death , Jed is at over 50% HP fully buffed , better to just kill it then get knocked down from behind right ?

8. Jed makes the more brave and stupid choice and tried to finish it off. But , he can’t hit it ! He has no sword ! It knocks him down swiftly , and just chews him up on the ground , he has no back up since the party is in the next area healing while he’s getting his flesh torn off.

9. Jed dies on the ground with no weapon in hand.

So that’s it , a real perfect storm of bad luck and bad decisions.

My apologies for being harsh OOC to the party , but that was a bit frustrating seeing 8 months of character development and playing get flushed down the toilet in about 30 seconds, in such a stupid and wasteful manner , ambushed by animals.

I took a rez for him , he owes some coin I imagine . Going to have to take a break or shelf Jed for a while , since he’s regressed back to Fall 2019 now , gotta figure out where to go with him in RP next, if at all.

Cheers

Oh, and another thing ...

Weapon destroying , hidden, ambushing enemies that can knock down a character with 16 discipline rather easily are worth ...

24 Xp .

:) :)

That's some sweet XP. Really, there are tons of areas that are off limits because of uberspawns like these. I lost a level 5 to two of these guys just cause I thought it would be safe to go walking around the City Wall. Nope. Straight to morgue. In this campaign setting, Waterdeep is besieged by magical beasts from all sides, and below. And if Caliope can't spot them.. then.. I don't know what can. It's not like we have level 20 rogues.

Sorry to hear about Jed. Leucrottas are WD version of Global Thermal Nuclear the only way to win is not to play.
