Clerics and domains

Post by SCI-kick »

So I’ve been messing around with cleric builds, or multi class builds , based on FR gods and their canon domains.

But, I had a conversation with Galadorn that perhaps canon domains aren’t really required. So , you can just pick whatever domains make sense for how you want to RP your PCs religion.

For example ... “My cleric worships Tempus , so he seeks victory and battle ( War domain, canon) , but his goal is to be a field chaplain and healer for his comrades ( Healing , non-canon )

Just wondering what the general DM/player consensus is on this, or if there is already a rule.

Either way is fine with me, for the record. I think player choice of non-canon opens up interesting RP.

Cheers

I've also requested a remake for Toliv, to change his domains to be on par with the canon domains for his god. I had no intention to pick domains off canon if that was "always" enforced". I chose domains that made sense to me at the time. It's been over a year playing him and it's never come up until now, but i'm more than happy to remake him, in fact I don't really want to play him without the remake since it is causing some blow-back to at least 1 player. WRT the remake, time is the issue, and i'm not in any rush to force any DMs to do this painful remake process, so, i'll play him as is (DM has requested meeting in-game to do a solo adventure for Toliv), so i'm not going to say no to that DM for requesting Toliv in game, but beyond what is important/DM-requested i'll probably not play Toliv anymore on my own or without a DM on, until I can get a remake.

I would be of the opinion that cleric domains should be as per the diety's portfolio.

Don't see why this would be necessary. Just don't use any of the domain powers or spells (if any) until you get the rebuild.

I think canon domains should be the norm, with exceptions being made by the HDM on a case-by-case basis.

I can easily see how this domain or that one could be substituted under the right background or RP circumstance (multiple deities, maybe?) However, I think there should be good biographic and/or IC reasons for them to be approved.

With regard to SCI's question about the healing domain, I would say that domain adds very little, with the easy availability of wands of healing and the healing skill that almost everyone on server can use.

You do indeed need to pick domains for your deity, however not all of them match 1:1 what NWN has implemented so some sensible substitution is necessary.

As far as I remember for Toliv, we cheesed the deity to make the domains fit.
There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

Here’s a few sites that can be helpful for cleric PCs :

If you are looking to match a certain Domain, here a list of dieties under each domain :

https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki ... _by_domain

Or, here a giant comprehensive list of all gods with descriptions , alignments , domains , weapons, ...everything .

Hope it’s useful :)

^ this is GUD.

I'm sure this stuff is posted somewhere else on ALFA but would not be a bad top-level sticky as well. :) Thank you Mr. Kick.

Yea it was long ago. Fun was had, no hearts broken, life goes on. :) Happy to remake so eeeeeveryone is peachy happy. But again, no rush on anyone to help with that, I can wait until any DM has time. It'll be a bit of a pain, but a sure must as soon as possible, so the entire cosmic nebula of existence does not unfold and suck us into a black hole of painful anti-canon blasphemy!

How does this translate into the choices players get and NWN provides when making a Cleric during character creation though?

Plan A

Step 1 - Choose a deity that you will enjoy playing the cleric of
Step 2 - Check if the canon domains listed in the links Scikick put up match the ones available in NWN:ee
Step 3 - If you cant muster the 2 required canon domains then check with a dm about substitutions

OR

Plan B

Step 1 - Decide which domains you cannot live without
Step 2 - Hope to shoehorn the deity around the domains because they work for you, not the other way around
Step 3 - If you cant muster the required deity then go to Plan A

Sorted
