Tech Tips & Player Guide

Post by Senor T »

Check out the Player Guide Google Doc here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PTL ... gX140E1Zpo

It contains a technical setup guide as well as in-game tips to try to help new players get up to speed.

Please note that it’s a work in progress and will probably never be complete. If you notice any gaps please leave a comment or request edit permission. I’d love to have as much help as I can get on this.

Tech tips are nice for those that haven't heard of GoG or Valve, but do we have any HAK/TLK reference to point out our fairly drastic changes to the engine?

Replacing the original non-Enhanced Edition writeup with a link to the player guide google doc. Just copying this old write up here so it doesn’t get lost just in case.
Senor T wrote:There are several technical issues players commonly run into when trying to run NWN on a modern machine. I would like to collect common issues and solutions here. I will edit this post to include any tips anyone posts below this so they're all up top. Maybe we can get a sticky for this?

GOG (http://www.gog.com) - This site sells old games that you can download online. Super handy for buying and installing the all-in-one version of the game with all patches.

Error: CD Key Already In Use - This is a common issue because GOG sells all copies of NWN with the same CD key. So the second person to try to log onto the server with their default GOG serial key will see this message and be blocked. To get your unique key, you need to log into your GOG account https://www.gog.com/account and select MORE -> SERIAL KEYS.

Performance Issues - These are sadly very common. I thought that my modern machine would chew through NWN1 and make it work like a dream. Not so. Turns out the game is so old that it doesn't even recognize how certain aspects of how modern machines work. (For example, NWN doesn't really take advantage of multi-core processors because there weren't any at the time!)

Note: Performance issues vary wildly and what works for one person doesn't work for someone else. You kind of just try different things until you find the right combination. I'll try to organize this so that the most-likely fixes to work are up top.

Computer Settings

Run in Compatibility Mode - You can run NWN as though it were on a previous version of windows. This helped me.
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/run-ol ... lity-mode/

1) Right-click the icon you use to launch NWN and select Properties.
2) Select the Compatibility tab.
3) Select the checkbox for Run this program in compatibility for...
4) Select the version of Windows you want to try (Windows XP Service Pack 2 is recommended)
5) Click Apply.

Run as Administrator - Every time I launch the game, I right click the icon and select Run as Administrator.

Set CPU Affinity - This relates to the multi-core issue. You can set NWN to run on just one core of your processor.
open nwnplayer.ini in the main NWN folder. Locate "Client CPU Affinity" and change the value to 1...."
You can experiment with different values for the CPU Affinity depending on how many cores you have. I pulled this quote from a great troubleshooting thread here: https://www.gog.com/forum/neverwinter_n ... ps_in_nwn1

NWN In-Game Settings

- Turn off Shiny Water
- Reduce the number of shadows

[I'll add other suggestions here]

*NOTE: I am NOT an expert on this stuff and at this point the things I tried that more or less worked were a few months ago and I'm fuzzy on them. If you changed a setting recently and noticed an improvement, please post it here.

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
