To Benjamin Lyonsbane, Priest of Kelemvor, Macsheehan ruins.
I have the honor to report a victory of arms over a lizard man horde outside the gates of Cantrev Pontswain, on the eighth day, Eleint 18, Year of the Blazing Hand.
Ably led by the elf Aglaril of Shaelara, a party of three (the elf, Master Aglaril Shaelara, an unidentified Merchant womanfrom Amn, and myself), were deputized by Lieutenant Tierney, of the militia of Pontswain, to deliver a ransom of three thousand gold pieces to a lizard man horde numbering in the hundreds. The Lizards were spread out in an arc to the north of the town, and had demanded the ransom of the town, against the pain of the town's destruction at the hands of the lizard horde. The lieutenant Tierney authorized Master Shaelara to negotiate for the town's ransom, which negotiations sadly failed. The lizard men spoke through the agency of a human interpreter, a woman in chains, who may or may not have actually been a prisoner of the lizards. The woman advised the negotiating party that such negotiations would be fruitless, and as soon as Master Shaelara's counter offer was put to the lizards, they attacked.
The lizards surrounded the negotiating party, which defended itself well, slaying dozens of the attacking lizards. Some of the lizard force appeared to attack other lizards, for reasons unknown, and during this period of battle and confusion the captive lady was seen to slip away, no longer in chains. The lizard army fled the field after a short sharp fight, retreating back to the fens from which they had come short hours earlier. The trail of the horde was tracked back by the skillful talents of Samuel Kirkson, who followed the trail into the waters of the salt flats, at which point the pursuit was terminated. Also of assistance during the height of the battle were the lady Aislinn Berlinde, and another whose name unfortunately escapes me. The ransom was duly returned to Lieutenant Tierney.
I should like to commend Master Shaelara, for his forthright leadership and stalwart courage, and the unidentified merchant lady from Amn, for her valiant bowmanship, as well as the lady Aislinn and Samuel Kirkson, for their helpful contributions to the successful outcome of the engagement.
I remain, your eminence's loyal servant,
Thanatos Darkdoor, acolyte of Kelemvor.

Thanks! Others feel free to add your own letters or conversations. The idea is to get a feel for the story developing from your PC. So letters to friends, letters to guard captains, conversations between PCs.... whatever.

Basically, if you like writing and can keep it to what 90% of PCs on MS would know post - (90% because all of us gossip like old women) - It will help with getting the adventure started each night

((just a bit of correction that should've been obvious to Thanatos IC:

- the lieutenant did not give any gold to Aglaril
- Aglaril dropped a sack of his own coins onto the ground during the parlay, obviously no way of knowing how much was in there
- there was no 'ransom duly returned' to the Lieutenant, since none was given in the first place

Don't assume; ask for clarification! Things can get confusing at times. :)

cheers!))

Aglaril follows up with recommendations to the Lieutenant:

1. priority should shift to setting up observers/scouts far south of town, so if the lizardfolk regroup and return the town is alerted in advance; if indeed there are 'hundreds' of them threatening the town they may return.
2. request additional aid from other towns/the powers that be on the Isle
3. put out word to adventurers, use some of the coin that was going to be given over to the lizardfolk to lure adventurers to the town's defense. One or two that possess exceptional scouting skills might prove especially valuable.

Aglaril offers to stay in the town for several days just in case, and eventually would want to scout out the Salt Flats... very carefully and ideally with a scout and others accompanying him (he's been warned about Slaads...).

There is a calm in the recent village assaults and extortions. To date, there have been four related events and rumors are flying around the Isles faster than the sea hawks

OOC:

I would like the PCs to write the story… PC’s please provide letters to the queen, the guard, their priests, whoever, or create conversations here for others to read regarding what is going on. -- Step up, we need the story of Koart, Moray, and Kingsbay....

Additionally, I will be overseas for 2 weeks. If you get together and create a plan, please post it here as well (perhaps in a letter to the Lieutenant or the Queen or each other). There will most likely be an IC response found here to your plan…

Bu spends weeks in and around Wyngate using all his abilities each day until exhausted cleaning, reviving, and healing the land, and the people of the devastation caused. He speaks very little to guards and the people just simply offering his help wherever needed. He spends extra time healing the land, using a wide variety of regrowth powers and regeneration abilities sparing no expense or physical strain. He basically works alone with only his Grizzly Bear companion very close at all times. His initial monetary donation for all causes is 5000 gold crowns to any remaining town officials to support payment of labourers, restocking food stores, and rebuilding any town treasury that may or may not have been taken.

OOC: Some very useful and powerful divine abilities that may play a powerful and quick role in this lengthy task might and do include:
Actual uses of the below are up to the imagination, and should a DM want clarification please PM me.
EX: Healing on survivors (including Regeneration, and Reincarnation if any families desire killed family members brought back...with a risk of course about "new races")
EX: Summonings for heavy manual labor to rebuild (where needed)
EX: LiveOak spell to create Treant Guards (2-3) to patrol the perimeter of the Town during rebuilding.
EX: Mass, Bear's Endurance and Mass Bull's Strength on labourers to boost their staminas and strength to work longer and more effective hours.
EX: Wall of Stone and Stone Shape to create strategic (permanent) added defenses for the town.
EX: Control Winds, and Control Water to create the most favourable working conditions for the people and volunteers aiding the rebuild.

Two Notes and a pouch are given to Lt Tierney. One addressed to him.

On cheap parchment scrawled hastily in crude writing:

Lieutenant,
Be a good lad and pass this letter to your superiors to be passed on to the High Queen or whoever else has the power to act on it. The 25gp in the pouch are for your troubles.
Your Friend,
Balkr

On fine paper in elegant flowing handwriting:

To High Queen Alicia,
As by now I am sure you are aware, there has been a vicious and unprovoked attack on Wyngate. I was one of the first to respond to the attack and witnessed the devastation first hand. I am sure I do not have to recount the horrors that were perpetrated on your loyal citizens. I write this offering you my services and those of my ship and crew. I am the Captain of the Lightning's Fury and have sailed the waters in and around the Moonshaes for many years. The attack on Wyngate was launched by sea and by those dressed as pirates. I offer my ship and crew to patrol the seas and board any suspicious looking vessels to root these pirates out before they can cause more harm. All I ask from the crown is a Letter of Marque and Reprisal from you stating that the Fury and I are acting on your behalf to ensure the safety of your subjects as I want to avoid any misunderstanding that might lead to conflict with honest merchants and your own troops. I am more than willing to meet with you or your emissary to discuss the details of this plan. Please leave word with the innkeeper of Trapper's Hold when and where you wish to meet to discuss.

Your humble and obedient servant,
Balkr Stormsoul
Captain of Lighting's Fury

Looking out over the water from Horstal, Zyrus spent his time studying books on necromancy and illusions, along with planar mysteries. The big Water Genasi had been hired by Drake recently to guard the town, and it was already boring him.

Nonetheless, coin was coin, and while the townfolk seemed uneasy with his presence at first (or was that his imagination? He could never tell with humans)... after watching him spar, a few seemed relieved to have one such as him protecting them. It also helped that his name was spoken of from Greengrass after a couple of the humans recognized him. That suited him just fine. He wasn't here for a popularity contest, but being respected makes the job easier should another raid come.

He kept himself busy with studying and sparring, and occasionally patrolled around the roads... but long term contracts always bored him when it came to small cantrevs, so cards were on the table again. That half-elf in Baldur's Gate had taught him well enough, and it would pass the time.

It was going to be a few long tendays.

Fumir walks into Koart Moving a bit Gingerly and asks to speak with Lt. Tierny . He reports that they killed Dozens of Goblins and Wargs at Grady but in the end had to retreat back to The Sea gathering as many townsfolk as possible and sailing to Callidyr..at That point Thais and Dawn were attending to the injured as they might and a little later many shipped out to Horstal where Thais sought to offer more aid and Lodging. He also reports that ere they reached "The Fury" they were met at a Bridge halfway to Kingsbay by a Scantily Clad Blonde woman in Red. One they had dealt with before. She asked That Zyrus, Thais, and Dawn hunt her sisters down. These sisters seemingly being very similar in appearance to the Blonde in looks and dress but having hair of a different Hue as far as any in the group could recall. A Dark Haired beauty seemed to lead the Horde of Wargs assailing Grady but attempts to waylay her failed.

Lieutenant Tierney sits for a moment at his desk to issue the warrants. Born to the life of soldiering, he dreads the desk, but the time has long since passed that he can escape it. Worse, he thinks to himself, is that these warrants are bound to bring as much trouble as they will potentially solve.
To all loyal subjects of her Majesty the Queen, by royal decree, a death warrant is issued for woman for her willful and heinous roles in the burning and pillaging of the Village of Grady as well as for her role in inciting the local humanoid tribes to assault Caer Moray. The woman has been described as beautiful with small noses and full lips. She has dark brown hair and eyes.

Additionally, an arrest warrant of two other women for questioning surrounding their roles in the destruction of Wyngate, the assault on Pontswain, as well as the threatening of the villages of Koart and Whiterock. Similar to the woman above, these two women have been described as beautiful with small noses and full lips. One has blonde hair and green eyes. One has red hair and blue eyes.

There are claims that the three women are sisters. Additionally, there are claims that the red haired woman has a staff that can control dragons. Both claims, however, are unverified.

Given the nature of their crimes, the women are presumed extremely dangerous.

The queen has authorized 7,000 gold coins for the death or capture of the dark haired woman and 3,500 gold coins for the capture of either of the two others.

HOWEVER, WITHOUT PROOF OF IDENTITY, NO PAYMENT WILL BE MADE AND FULL PERSECUTION WILL BE EXECUTED AGAINST THOSE WHO WILLINGLY OR UNWILLINGLY MURDER OR DETAIN THE INNOCENT SUBJECTS.

By chance, or by invitation, Drake, Tha'is, Zyrus, Fumir, and Balkr met at the Twisted Sail tavern. The group was informed that there was trouble brewing in the Fairheight Mountains north of White Rock. Furthermore, it was rumored that the agent behind the trouble may be one of the women tied to the assaults previously made throughout the isles. During the initial discussions, Tha'is dashed off out of anger do a perceived slight from Zyrus. Drake ran after her, and after searching for her, found her with the wild woodsman Bu. Drake convinced both to return with him to the Twisted Sail. Once all were gathered, the group made the decision to head out to the Fairheight Mountains post haste.

The journey to the mountains was uneventful. Once they entered the mountains Drake scouted ahead and examined what foes they might be dealing with. Returning to the rest of the group, he informed them that there was a very large band of warg riding goblns and other goblinoids guarding the entrance to a cave. To the south and by the beach, there was another cave being guarded by gnolls.

Tha'is first sought to speak to the goblins, their reaction to laugh in derision, and for even more to come pouring out of the cave. Within moments, they came down charging at us. The battle was intense and at times a number of the group was sorely pressed. In the end though, our party proved victorious in slaying all of the foes we had met out before the caves. All of us searched amongst the dead for a sign of any human woman, but none was found. Soon, all of us stood at the cave entrance, pondering our next move.

The priest completed his spell to prevent scrying in his chambers in Corwell Town. He turned toward his two "guests" still uneasy about having a Talosian priest in his private chambers but he had been told in no uncertain terms to provide the man with anything he needed. He simply said to them "It is done." as he wondered what business the druid could possibly have with Lt. Tierney. The young priest would never find out as it had also been made clear to him that Tierney and the barbarian druid were to meet in private. The priest closed his chamber door and went about the rest of his daily tasks as instructed.

Balkr Stormsoul leaned in closer to Tierney instinctively lowering his voice though it was unnecessary due to the wards the young priest set in the room, "So ye are aware that Fumir, Sir Drake, Tha'is, and Thanatos went into the Farheights ta sniff out the Raven haired bitch which is responsible for the destruction of Grady. Well we gets ta her lair and there be two goblins waiting outside. Tha'is naturally thinks it be a good idea ta talk ta the beasts and as usual it is a waste of time." Balkr says as he shakes his head. "The strange part lad is that the gobos start attacking each other. As a few of us heard a woman chanting from inside the cave, we figured she be the cause. So we enter the cave and there be the Black haired woman with some big orc guards. Drake decides ta talk to her of course. So Drake, Tha'is and the Witch start talking about the games the 3 sisters play and the next thing I know she be threatening to take me ship. Fumir says he knows the answer ta her question and he would put his blade against her thousand gold. He said later he did that ta get her off me ship." The druid shrugs. Balkr then grabs Tierney's arm and shakes it for effect as he continues " And when Fumir gets it wrong he hands over his blade ta one of the orcs as easy as ye please! Anyway this doesn't get her off threatening me ship so she declares in ten days time me ship will be burned ta the waterline unless I do something fer her." Balkr's eyes that meet Tierney's take on a deadly glint, "She asked fer yer head lad."

A letter is written in Skaug, fluent quillmanship evident under Zyrus' hand

"Lt. Tiemey(sp?)

Just tonight, our adventuring group found out about a new potential threat to the Moonshae Isles near the Skaug lighthouse, and at the very least, I can confirm that there is a sizable force of humans near it. We captured one of them during a raid on their patrols and were told that Corwell is a target. Whether or not this is true or not, it makes sense with the pattern of going after new targets. Thus far, we believe the force to be 25 strong at least, with a dozen engaged and killed by us. They are experienced enough to be able to stand toe to toe with me in a half dozen, so I do not know how your people would fare. This letter is being sent in advance of our group. Some of us, -including me- are heading to Corwell now in the hopes we can help defend the town before they get there, should this threat be real, and their target is truly Caer Corwell.

Payment relayed by Fumir can be given on our arrival.

The following letter is written in a crisp, and concise style and has been delivered to high queen Alicia Kendrick

Your Highness,

I, Drake Veneshuel write this report to you regarding the recent events involving Corwell and Koart. As you most assuredly know, a group of witches have led assaults upon various villages and towns within your island domains. Previously it had been learned that Corwell was possibly to be the next victim of the foul and evil raiders, so as you know a warning was given of this threat to Corwell.

As was learned yesterday, this was no idle and empty threat. When I arrived in Corwell yesterday to aid any defense, I was quickly informed by the merchant adventurer Fumir that he, Zyrus the warrior, Thanatos the young priest, Balkr the sailor , Jax the warrior maiden , Aseel the soldier and finally Lady Thais, were all making a quick march to Koart since word had spread that it was under imminent threat.

In fact your highness , when we arrived we found it to already have been taken by a large group of raiders. After an early and failed attempt to attack the raiders, we heard word that Corwell was indeed under attack. It was decided that we would focus on retaking Koart so that the road to Corwell would not be blocked . After several attempts we were able to retake Koart from the raiders and capture their leader. Sadly much of Koart is now in ruins and many of it's people are dead.

I decided to also inform KingsBay and Horstall of what had occurred as soon as we captured the leader, but as soon as I returned to Koart, I found it under a new assault from raiders who had made it from Corwell. Luckily I arrived in time to stem and defeat the assault.

I then made my way quickly to Corwell where I was able to assist in the final rout of the invading force. In the end the invasions failed but at an enormous loss of life and property your highness.

As for me , on my part I will do what I can to aid in the rebuilding. A contingent of my men are in Koart now to ensure some calm and safety for those who remain. In addition I will help the rebuilding in both Corwell and Koart out of my own treasury.

Lastly , we have sent the captured raider leader to Callydrr where we hope much can be learned from her.

Your faithful servant,
Drake Veneshuel
