A Helping Hand

Post by maxcell »

"Aye, somethin got ya good, girl." Bram remarked softly and with a calming smile, as he examined the girls left foot and the deep cut on its bottom. Deep red blood trickled through and over Bram's large fingers that held the appendage and dripped onto the dry ground in the village square, while Bram fished in his pouches for a small jar or two.
"Hush, now"
He calmly ordered, both to the crying girl, and her sniffling older brother who had carried the girl up from the reedy moat that surrounded the small village of Dultann.
"That blood is how yer body whar made ta help clean out such a cut, and ta let ya know yer still livin." He winked. "Yer Earthmother has her eyes on ya, and help all round ya." Bram briefly indicated the nearby druids who watched them from a distance, their faces unreadable to him.
"First let's stop ya from losin all of it, girl" He whispered a soft prayer, that the children remembered him calling the Earthmother "Great Mother".
With the prayers ending, the bleeding slowed and stopped altogether, and Bram grinned "See? Tha lass wasna going ta die. From tha looks of it, she either stepped on a sharp rock or mayhaps sommun has tossed a blade inta tha moat. Either way, ya best not wade in it without boots."
Bram helped the girl to stand, and she did so, gingerly at first and then jumping up and down.
"Easy there missy. Don't go runnin no races just yet." Bram handed a small jar to the boy, "Ye tell yer ma, put this on tha wound tanight afore she goes ta bed. Wipe it offn tha mornin, and keep er hoof dry tha rest o tha day" Bram, poked the girl in the ribs adding to her giggling at his joke.
"Will ya be heading to tha Greengrass festival on tha other Isle? Ye and yer folks?", Bram asked the children as he gathered up his items then looked up to see the two children had run off already, and chuckled to himself.

"Likely not" A druidess stated flatly as she approached him. "Most here are working much harder and longer to glean what they can from the ground, and lake. They just don't have the time, and if they did, they would not have the resources to pay for the ship there."
Bram mumbled as he bent and picked up his staff, "Ah see", he stated. "Well, ahm sure ye agree that any that could attend should, so they can give onor to tha Earthmother, git some good food, and chances ta win much needed coin."
Bram rummaged in his purse, and handed a handful of gold pieces to the druidess.
"Here, that's ta pay fer any what cannae afford tha ships fee. I ask that as tha Earthmothers servants, ye guide and pertect those that wish ta go, pay thar way, and yerselfs."
Bram smiled a friendly grin at the blinking druidess, who then inclined her head to him.

As he headed west toward the sea, the sun was still low in the sky, yet Bram knew that even at noon, the day would not grow much warmer, so he pulled his cloak even tighter and raised his hood.
