A sensible name, Bram thought to himself. Aye, Diaan, now she had a right proper name. Finley, an even Solis too. Proper names., he nodded.
That feller Nekha...Nekhisan...hells, Nek is what Ill call him. Nek doesnt seem ta have no trouble pernouncin Kan's full name, but to Bram, Nek's full name seemed just as strange to his tongue as Kan's did.
Bram sat back from the ragtag group he had accompanied to the small village of elves.
Llewyr, he corrected himself, that's what Kan called his kin, Llewyr not elves.
Turning his gaze to look over the village, he was met with either cold gazes from its residents, anger in some cases from those that didn't look away immediately.
We aint welcome here long, Bram acknowledged. They see us all as Ffolk, nevermind tha truth of it. From what I 'ave heard, I can't say I blame em either.
Bram looked back to his group while they looked over the items a recent skirmish had provided for them. Glancing disinterestedly at the things on the ground, Bram then returned his gaze back to each person in turn. To each one's travel weary face.
Finley and Solis both had shown their skill with a weapon recently, and a willingness it seemed to aid in a cause without seeking reward.
Fine way ta live yer life, Bram agreed silently.
Diaan was the third to offer aid in the dangerous trip.
Quiet...purty...shy I spose...real purty, Bram thought then felt his cheeks warm. When the girl spoke, it was quiet, but thoughtful and Bram thanked Chauntea for speaking wise words through the girl to them, whether she knew it or not, he thought.
Bram closed his eyes for a few moments to gather strength and commune with Chauntea in gratitude for bringing them safely through. Hearing Nek's voice telling the others that Kan would be leading them back at daybreak, Bram opened his eyes to find Kan's own eyes, which lay deep beneath his wolf pelt hood, staring intently at him.
It was a gaze Bram had seen numerous times before, yet still found unsettling. Fortunately, it was as short lived as usual and Kan turned his eyes skyward, apparently searching for something in the trees.
Bram was young, but in his service to Chauntea, he had encountered many in need, many who sought relief for suffering. He therefore recognized some unspoken struggle, or pain, or madness which had a strong grip on Kan. The elf had never explained it, and if questioned either responded with a silent, penetrating stare or vehement rebukes, so Bram had stopped asking.
Ah trust that tha Great Mother knows best what path will lead im back ta life, Bram had decided as he watched Kan wander to the treeline.
Bram again wearily closed his eyes, yet the dawns light already was breaking.
Thank Chauntea, I'm a country boy.
