Hey HEEGz, I clicked to your profile on RollD20, but there were no links there to your charcater sheet, or was there supposed to be any? Or were you just showing us your presence there? (I never used RollD20 ever yet... mah bad).

I also have a thing March 10th. Other than that my schedule is free. I'm hoping to hop on IRC and roll stats in the next hour. Can someone remind me the command for drop lowest for the bot?
This Friday is senior night at the game so I will have little control over my schedule. Will log in as soon as possible. I did get my char sheet filled out last night on roll 20 at least.

So how good is roll20?

Particularly for running things?

I've always prefered spending my time trying to tell an story than rolling dice and working out if gubbins mcgubbins sword stacks with aunty panties feats. Do they abstract enough away?

How easy is it to keep in control as dm? Do you end up with tokens moving all over the place and choas or is it nicely ordered?

Lastly how much work is it to set up the world? How much has to be prework and how much can be realistically done on the fly? Can I drop in npcs easily as and when (and not have it be obvious?)

Code: Select all

                NWN/NWN2 Roll20 Tabletop
Prep Effort Lots* Some Little
Inline Effort Little Some Lots
* Lots, but can be shared if you join some kind of multi-DM effort. But then you also have rules to follow.
** Also, these compare to each other, and aren't absolute measures. It's a lot of effort to DM, but writing "lots" in every column isn't helpful.

You can move the mark on that Roll20 column closer to the NWN2 measures if you know EMCAScript in one of its vile forms (JavaScript, JScript, ActionScript, etc), but it looks like they're dealing with a legal barrier for distributing more automation. They turn at least a bit of a blind eye to some of the "community contributions," but this has the feel of a company trying to walk that tightrope, and features being restricted on account.

Roll20 has a very low barrier to entry. Just need a browser. Our chat program can also be run from a browser. I played last week via two tabs on my chromebook and didn't have to open my gaming laptop that I use for nwn2.

Roll20 is flexible. We used voice and text. We did not use tokens but did use maps. GMing in any game has huge amounts of overhead and roll20 doesn't really help with that; it is just a really nice Internet based digital tabletop platform. I had a ton of fun and only spent an hour or so filling out my char sheet. If I was playing a noncaster I could have been ready in about fifteen minutes.

Alright, I'm going to be here this Friday (your time) for the next session. I am expecting all to turn up, or I shall use the word scumbag in excess.
