Contributor Turnout

Post by FoamBats4All »

A few others have hit it on the head when they've said that ALFA needs more contributors. Ideas, rulings, and adjustments made don't do much if we can't actually get those changes in-game.

So, be it for area toolsetting, item creating, aiding DMs who need other toolsetting, assisting with ACR content, implementing Standard's decisions, or adding content from the backlog of HAK content requests, there are a lot of areas we could use contributors on.

With Standards looking to be put on a faster pace with less ideas going into oblivion, someone needs to actually make those edits, and tech progress has slowed (though there are also some huge projects on the table for the next release). Before that gets steam, we should build a base of contributors to support it.

In a similar style of Castano's DM-focused thread: What can Tech do to help builders/contributors step up? More streams/videos? Tutorials? Documentation? Any ideas on what would incentive you/others to help build? Any ideas as to current roadblocks that might be preventing people from doing so?

To those who wish to contribute, visiting #alfa-tech or #alfa-builders is a great first step -- while we joke around quite a bit in the former, we do offer whatever help/answers we can to anyone interested.

I'm willing to learn stuff for trivial matters. Only thing keeping me from bothering was approval for any of the work I did and being taught.

Approval can be handled in a variety of ways. If you're interested in toolsetting, we should match you up with an HDM to join the builder team for that server.

There are two main channels to turn to for assistance in building/scripting, #alfa-builders and #alfa-tech specifically. If you have something that in particular that many would like to know how to do, I could do another livestream/video, if people think that would help.

I would be willing to learn enough to be a happy helper for dms. Doing Item creating and things like that. Or what ever else may fall into that category.

Building is a bit of a gray area with me. Foam should know me well enough to know i like building things that look awesome and find it fun (granted its not EXACTLY the same, but meh) But i have heard how hard tool setting can be, even just getting the right alfa haks in the right places. And I am lets say a "slow learner" when it comes to just learning things from reading instructions. That's just not the way my brain does thing. I would think, if maybe a builder could do a once or twice a month group teaching that would be great. (Where it would be one builder, or how ever many really, and a few people who wanted to learn and you would get done what you could in a few hours.) I think it would also be a plus if something like this could be done over skype or something, just easier, but that's just a plus.

I have always had a interest in learning the tool set. But I have never wanted to bug a builder who all ready has so much to do to take time and teach me.

And I don't really know anything about what you mean by "implementing standards" so, i wont comment on that portion.

1. Make a builder module loaded with all the haks, and placeable blueprints from one of the servers.
2. Distribute it easily to every member of ALFA, whether they ask for it or not. Link the piles of youtube video tutorials to the distribution.
3. Offer alfa-tech as a place for those who open it to go for hands on support in using it.
4. Let people start slowly building interiors.
5. Make a clean new forum for HDMs to post specifications for interiors they need built.
6. Someone write up a builders FAQ and Common Errors to Avoid doc and post it.

I've done items, did one small room for Exodus once upon a time. I'm not the person to talk to about making 'beautiful' areas, as I'm rather spartan about decoration by nature.

I should be able to learn how to build NPCs easily. Other tech stuff I will need help with... but I imagine I will learn quick enough.

What Castano said would go a long way to making things work.

I'll second that. An easy installation of what is needed will go a long way to keeping folks enthusiastic. Nothing is worse than having trouble with getting something set-up. Add ease of access to self-help and a source of frustration during a typical learning curve goes away. Makes sense to me at least.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone.

I will be working on a better build module and tutorial to help potential contributors get started. As with Adanu, if you want to help out, #alfa-builders and #alfa-tech are great resources. I'd be willing to do a group building 'lecture' once a month -- I did start the whole streaming thing to teach people to contribute to the Creature Project, though it wasn't so effective there.

Bug the builders! Look at it this way: If you get on board and learn, you lessen their work. So really, you're doing them a favor by harassing them. :P

Sounds like a great approach, thanks for the suggestions. I'll work on a better builder module and get to seeing where to start tutorials. When we get to that point I'll bug Hialmer for a forum.

I made a bunch of armor models and uploaded them to FTP for Skullport ages ago. AFAIK they never made it IG. Could use them. Less important with customizer though.

I only been able to get the haks to load up in the toolset once. Is there some special order they need to be in?

>>Here<< is my build-mod. It should have everything you need in order to access everything.
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

If Tech will write some Javascript for me, I will write C# for Tech! You know you want to code in a language where "Math.min() < Math.max()" evaluates to "false".
