Questions about "Animal Messenger" spell

Post by Galadorn »

Below is the srd20's description on "Animal Messenger" spell.

My question is:
The range... as stated... I assume is only the range the caster must be within to reach the tiny animal, during casting, correct? OR, is that range... also the only range the messenger can "go to after casting" and the instructions are given? :?

I just wanted to be clear... as for me i think the "certain place well known to you or an obvious landmark" as stated in the spell description on srd20 below, is and would make sense to be within reason......anywhere the tiny creature can travel too within the spell duration (which is Days/level of caster) ?

Secondly, it states "a Tiny animal". Can this also be a flying animal, like a Sparrow or other small bird (which can certainly get to places MUCH faster and further than a mouse for instance)?

Again, just making sure before I make anymore assumptions.

(Simple Example: Bu is in Quaervarr... can he send a Sparrow to Rivermoot as an "Animal Messenger" to hang out on the Sundial outside the Tavern through the use of this spell?)

Animal Messenger
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting] Level: Brd 2, Drd 2, Rgr 1
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One Tiny animal
Duration: One day/level
Saving Throw: None; see text
Spell Resistance: Yes
You compel a Tiny animal to go to a spot you designate. The most common use for this spell is to get an animal to carry a message to your allies. The animal cannot be one tamed or trained by someone else, including such creatures as familiars and animal companions.
Using some type of food desirable to the animal as a lure, you call the animal to you. It advances and awaits your bidding. You can mentally impress on the animal a certain place well known to you or an obvious landmark. The directions must be simple, because the animal depends on your knowledge and can’t find a destination on its own. You can attach some small item or note to the messenger. The animal then goes to the designated location and waits there until the duration of the spell expires, whereupon it resumes its normal activities.
During this period of waiting, the messenger allows others to approach it and remove any scroll or token it carries. The intended recipient gains no special ability to communicate with the animal or read any attached message (if it’s written in a language he or she doesn’t know, for example).
Material Component: A morsel of food the animal likes.

The spell compels an animal within range (25 ft + 5 ft/2 levels) to deliver the message, so long as the message is delivered within the spell's duration (1 day/ level).

Birds count as animals, so long as they are Tiny birds. They can go as far as you want, so long as the destination is within the limit of the spell's duration.

If you think Bu can adequately impress upon the bird which sundial to sit on, then that works. But it would allow anyone to approach and pick up the delivered message, as you can't declare a recipient with the spell.
