How possible would it be to make welcome threads for folk as they join? Seems that the number of new people logging in is greater than the number of "Hello!" threads in New Players.

We're not exactly bursting at the seams for new players who actually log in, of course, but I get the sense that the average person here guesses that there are fewer people trying ALFA out than are actually doing so (the same way that most folk underestimate our player population, and probably for the same reasons), and it's very rare to find our bastard-soaked bastardry inside of the welcome threads. They'd probably be good for morale.

Frantically greeting each and every new face around here just stinks of desperation. It's not attractive.

I am not above desperation or begging for pity "RP" hey it almost worked once in college.... The reason I posted it here is we have too many forums. This is the forum everyone reads. New people forum is a near wasteland... I also wanted everyone to see how many people signed up in 2013 to date.

In the context of having just accepted an application? There I'd disagree. "We have required some active action on our part to have access to our stuff; we have taken that action, and now inform the community at large" is kinda standard practice in game-focused online organizations. Accepting a new member, in those contexts where new members are actually accepted and don't just "walk in," without at least telling everyone currently online that there's a new member smacks of disinterest and elitism.

If we opened up a server again and then made a new thread for everyone who logged into the no-password server, then I'd agree and would find it to be unpleasant times to try to welcome every one of them.

A couple of names on that list, I did not realize they were that new to ALFA; some of them have made themselves very much at home it seems and are fitting in quite well. Welcome indeed.

DM times should be on the greeting. I would welcome a "new people liason" helping new folk find DM times and making DMs aware of new folk in our timezone. I know that's sort of lazy on my part, but most new players don't put timezones in their greeting threads (when they even make one), and trying to coordinate a game from there usually falls flat. ( I do realize most new folk are American side)
