Enchantment Issue

Post by Senor T »

I'm unable to get the required feat when leveling to enchant using the Shadowdale rules.

According to the SD enchantment rules, the feat skill focus... is used as a substitute for several odd enchantment feats not supported by NWN. In my case, I wish to take Craft Wondrous Item (which I believe is a pre-req of Craft Magical Arms and Armor) and the substitute feat is Skill Focus Craft Trap. I'm leveling my 10th lvl of wizard (fighter 1, wiz 10), I have no ranks in craft trap (though according to NWN it's not a skill that requires training) but I cannot choose skill focus as a feat for any skill. I have tried sinking all 6 skill points into craft trap without success. I have tried on both AC and NC servers.

It appears that according to NWN and PnP rules, I should have the option to choose the skill focus feat, but it just doesn't show up among the listed feats. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,
T

Craft Wondrous isn't a prereq. of Craft Magic Arms & Armor. Maybe this'll change your mind about taking it.

Anyhow, I'd suggest testing in vanilla NWN (i.e., completely un-haked) whether a PC like yours is able to select this feat at level up. Plenty of ways to level up a PC using console commands or if uncomfortable with those, there's cheesy levelup mods on the NWN Vault. Would at least let us know if this is a bug in our haks, or just something that NWN always does.

Worst case, it's an idiosyncracy of the game that forbids taking the feat, i.e., unfixable. However, I am sure the DM team could agree with you on a substitute useless feat, something like Skill Focus: Innuendo... could drop a 0 weight no drop token on you saying "OOC: Rhekka can craft wondrous items, used substitute feat Skill Focus: Innuendo. She is no good at Innuendo though." Again, it's just an agreed placeholder for a feat, a different placeholder could be agreed upon.

...

Personal note, my own PC, who has rogue levels, has "Skill Focus: Craft Trap", taken around 4th, for this same reason. That has to have been some time in 2006, so it's certain that the feat is enabled... had 0 Craft Trap ranks to start with as well.

some skills it won't let you take at level up depending on class, like rogues can't take ranks in Animal Empathy.

Looks like wizards and traps won't work, so easiest is like Brokenbone suggests and use something else, with an ooc marker of some sort.

Hmm I might be wrong with this but....
Isn't this a bonus wizard feat? In that case, I think you can only choose from a specific list of feats, right? Is skill focus in that list?
NWN1 PC:
Now (2017): Bran, naive servant of Lathander, currently thinking about opening a potion shop.
circa 2000: JenWa, proud mother duck and half-crazed sorceress of Shadowdale.

NW2 PC: Kasil Trueforger, dwarven scholar of Felbarr.

Right. Wizards get a restricted choice of bonus feat every five levels and a free choice of normal feats every three levels, so the engine would make you wait till PC12 to take this feat.

You might be able to negotiate something else as a substitution feat or convince someone to Leto? It'd depend on who's DMing you and how close they want to stick to the PnP rules, but technically, item crafting feats would be available to be taken as wizard bonus feats in PnP. The game engine just won't let you at the ones we tend to accept as substitution.

(and a skill focus doesn't require that you have any ranks in the skill you've taken a focus in -- best put them skill points where ya need 'em.)

What she said. Should be available as a wizard bonus feat, the absence is just an artifact of our choice of feat for substitution. If your PC has a specialized school, can you take spell focus for your prohibited school as a placeholder? That'd be a good "useless" replacement alternative, so long as the DMs know what's up. If not... someone who knows the wizard bonus feats better than I do can perhaps suggest something. I know in NWN2, that quicken spell is essentially useless, since free actions don't exist as such- so that might be another alternative, I presume the same holds true for NWN1.

As near as I can tell, Quicken Spell removes the Cast Time, but not the Pose Time listed in Spells.2da for NWN1. It makes it somewhat useful (as casting averages 1 second instead of 2.5 seconds, except for a few spells - it might be immune to being interrupted, as well, but that's very hard to time right for a good ol' fashioned test.) but, yes, nerfed when compared to PnP Quicken Spell.

I'm for begging a DM for a Letoing. Take brew potion and ask the DM to change that feat 944 into a 589 on the bic. It'd spare us all confusion down the road. *nodnod*
