NWN2 - More than one player with your box/game

Post by Rick7475 »

OK, we all know how expensive it is to upgrade to play NWN2.

If you have other family members/roommates/buddies/etc who are members of ALFA and want to play NWN2 and share your game/box, what is the current ruling?

For example, let's say I have a roommate named Billy Bob. We are poor students who share a two bedroom appartment and we also share the computer/laptop. We are both members of ALFA and have played NWN1 for years. Now, we split on upgrade to the video card and purchasing the game and expansion. Let's say we both have classes at different times and work different shifts, so basically one can play while the other is working or at school, and visa versa. I study Art History and Billy Bob studies Nuclear Physics. So, here we are, two ALFA members able to play NWN2, but on the same box with the same CD Key, same IP, etc.

To throw another wrench in the scenario, Billy Bob's hot blonde girlfriend, Bobby Sue, who is studying nude internet modelling and computer engineering (and searching for a roommate), decides to play on the App Server and likes playing a hot blonde Moon Elf: but on our computer with our game. She eventually joins ALFA.

So, we have three ALFA members playing NWN2 on one box, sharing the same game, the same IP, and the same CD Key.

I just want to find out if this is allowed.

It's allowed. But then people start thinking you're all one person.

I thought it wasn't allowed. I don't have any problem with it, though I think if you're sharing an account you should let the admins know about it in advance. And trust the people you're sharing with, since you'd all be getting banned together if one screws up.

Has anyone tried swapping the order of the CDkeys for NWN2? Might be able to work 2 users on one set of NWN2/MotB that way, more or less legitimately. (eg, put your MotB CDkey on top, your NWN2 one below in the nwncdkey file)

Or less than legitimately, depending on your perspective.

Certainly, sharing IP addresses is not uncommon and certainly accepted.

I don't have a problem with this, but I agree with GF that the admins should be given situational awareness about it first. I'm not sure about banning everyone for one person screwing up, but the disciplining process would certainly be complicated by the circumstances.

As far as your example, Rick, the answer seems clear. Neither you nor Billy Bob should be allowed any computer time. Bobby Sue needs to study.

If some people play like that they have to tell the admins.

In the logs it will appear as one person playing 3 characters which is a ban able offense.
Better tell the admins and your HDM/DM before they discover it...

If I was Lead Admin:

I'd say we rule that Billy Bob is not allowed on the grounds that he has a redneck moniker and he is most likely a communist anyway.. however his hot blonde girlfriend should definitely be allowed to play..

Trick question, keep Bobby Sue, ban you and Billy Bob.

That was easy.

Please inform the Admin if this situation arises - that is not a guarantee that we, or at least I, will give this a thumbs-up, but we do need to know. Otherwise, we will have no choice but to assume that you are actually all one person simply trying to circumnavigate ALFA's one PC rule. And that of course, would lead to banning. So, if you have a situation like this, please talk to us and we will see what we can do. Thanks.

Well, I don't mean you'd be intentionally punishing everyone, but if multiple people are sharing a CD key and IP then you're going to have to ban all of them. There's no other way around it. If the innocent people got their own copy, then they could get back to playing.

So what's Bobby Sue's email address? I think we should offer her a trial membership immediately..
