While some thought to balance should probably be given, I guess it always depends on your criterion.

Nothing in this thread gave me the impression Rumple was trying to create a mechanically-perfectly-balanced DnD nerd-match of unarmed combat.

I had the feeling his "balancing" criterion was giving everyone some way to participate and have fun through various kinds of interactions and class-strengths, making this a roller-coaster of rollicking entertainment... not so much a thing to be "won".

It's both to me, but in the case of the contest, my point still stands.
First Character: Zyrus Meynolt, the serene Water Genasi berserker. "I am the embodiment of the oceans; serene until you summon the storm." Zyrus: http://tinyurl.com/9emdbnd

Second Character: Damien Collins, the atypical druid. "What? Being a stick in the mud is boring. No pun intended grins"

I thought the invisible daggers would be used when two PCS fight who BOTH do not have unarmed-combat feats...

So it would make it so when each combatant attacks, each one would not get the extra AOO attack every single round. To basically keep the playing field level, but prolong the fight perhaps, less floating words over the combatants heads as AOOs fire, etc...

But I think if those daggers were made for use, any fight a monk is in, (or any PC who has improved-unarmed-combat feat actually), then the opponent should not use those daggers.

That being said, like Adanu said, Monks should win really. So if an un-trained PC with no unarmed feats wants to challenge a Monk, he/she should take the risk and accept the AOO the monk will get each round.

Or make two seperate Tournaments. One for unarmed trained, and the other for unarmed untrained.

And the winner in American wrestling is based on martial skill, too!

American Wrestling is about ridiculous stories, not fighting. The fighting is just the dressing.

Monks are better at fighting without weapons. That is what they do. I am not going to give them the shaft. In any event - there are very few (pc) monks.

Some "events" will mean the monks advantage may be lessened with weapons tossed in the ring or whatever. Its going to be a "random" thing. Everyone who participates will have a shot at winning, some classes (and players, and levels) will have a better shot than others.

The point here though... isn't "winning" (and realistically, it may be NPC's who wins some of the categories, this is going to be a very wide spread competition after all, with the some of the best of the best (cheaters) competing). The point is in participating, and having a good time. In logging in and being part of the event, wether it is in getting your teeth knocked out, in snooping on the other teams, breaking kneecaps, in trying to whip the crowd into a frenzy, pick pocketing the crowd, or gambling on your favorite fighter, or even sponsoring an NPC fighter...

The finals are in Skullport, fairness and balance should not be assumed to be goals IC or OOC.

I'm going to have to disagree on the ''ftfy' part. I consider it a mix. I seem to be in the minority though (as usual) so I'm going to stop here.

Nor for some characters, should the goals be assumed as having anything to do with the contest itself. ;)
