IIRC wasn't the main concern with that idea something along the lines of opening ourselves up to legal issues due to the fact we are based on someone elses IP?

no because we're using nwn2 we have the right to use it. you don't open or close a legal issue by making a club...the people that made teh modules and host them are still liable for their stuff no matter what. if anything a club provides a bit of a shield.

Few conditions on how we're allowed to modify NWN2, but we're well within them.
- Our mods have to only run on full versions of the software.
- Our mods don't modify executable files
- Our mods don't break other laws
- Our mods don't include intellectual property except when it's ours or D&D/FR
- Our mods don't make any commercial profit

I'd probably be more worried about PDFs floating around. Them copyrights sure don't come with special-written clauses saying what conditions allow you to reproduce/distribute them.

Mikaylas post on the subject from 2007 for those that are interested.

Considering one of the catch cries of ALFA for a decade has been that there is too much red tape outside the game, that post doesn't exactly paint a pretty picture.

It's six or a half dozen to me, just pointing out our social club doesn't own any of its own web domains (.org or .info), or even it's Azure account. Those are all held by members with differing levels of participation - some having been absent for years. We can either continue in that manner or form some sort of organization capable of contracting with goDaddy for the url and MS for Azure.

True, but it does seem to be a fair bit of added external stuff that is lumped onto whoever is elected and while the current Admin may be fine with it, future ones may not, particularly if they are not American.

yeah Swift it is extra stuff, and that stuff reduces the risk of people disappearing, dying, etc. and taking the physical parts of ALFA with them by establishing club continuity for the rest of us. (Same as GitHub has put our mods up in perm. storage)
It's why every other long standing club around the world (not just the USA) is incorporated in some form. I still recommend we consider looking into it again, but that's up to our admin I suppose.

I cant personally say I have come across all that many online communities, even ones with physical hardware, that have taken that step, however, particularly ones with a global user base.
