why is there super-heroes?

Post by SCI-kick »

Please ALFA....

Quit with the invincible PCs, with wings and crazy electric flaming swords.

It really doesn't do well for ALFA.

Just an opinion, from a player on the last leg.

Level 17 Favoured Souls get wings in D&D 3.5. It is 100% canon. Other classes, I can't speak of.

Bog standard 3.5e D&D is fantasy superhero simulator. Which is why ALFA shouldn't be using bog standard 3.5e D&D.

Good luck changing that one though!

I agree. Retire that stupid red-armored magical super hero who casts spells and calls down divine power. Plus, we brought him back to life. That shit is stupid, he isn't Jesus.

If you're going to let the success of one player ruin your fun, you're doing something wrong. Get over it, and play your own character -- which is every bit as much a superhero as a level 20 favored soul, or a level 15 paladin, or a level 12 wizard, or a level 10 monk, or a level 3 druid, or anything other than a level 1 fighter.

Things don't really change in this regard. We used to have drow who wore armour that somehow looked like Chers outfit from if I could turn back time (basically a bikini if you're too young to now what I'm talking about)..but were still full plate as far as AC goes.

I always do wonder about flaming swords however.
If you haven't paid a fair bit for a special scabbard...doesn't it just burn?
Or if you do have a special scabbard doesn't the fire just expand the air in the bottom so it' just pops out?
Or do they have on-off switches?

In reality I don't really care about a few peeps having wings, light sabers and tooth-floss-gstring-armour. Hell, kids half orc wears a top hat!
If everyone does it would be annoying however...like BGTSCC in ALFA1. BUt we probably wont see another person grind ;) their way to level whatever.

...in fact, if we're able to add wings into chars where lore permits it allows some very interesting RP directions for my druid of Aerdrie Faenya!!
playing Nathaniel Ward - Paladin of the Morninglord and devout of Torm (cookie cutter and proud of it)

One might note that the "invincible PCs" were here first, which we know because acquiring one takes the entire life cycle of a platform under ALFA rules-- and our yearly turnover of such PCs looks to be near 20%. ALFA makes sure that such characters are rare, and our ruleset makes sure that they're less obnoxious than canonical figures like Elminster.

If the ideas of such PCs are existing is somehow offensive, I'd probably echo Xanthea-- D&D is the wrong game, and Forgotten Realms the wrong setting, for you, sir. You can watch us for any platform transitions in the probably-distant future, because there's a non-zero chance that we'll have to leave D&D/FR behind so we can develop something without running afoul of IP laws, but such things will be a feature of ALFA2 until we shutter the platform.

Totally agree X2. Olin should have died a long time ago in that dark place where he was smashed apart by giants and his unscathed, heroic companions dragged his battered, bloodied corpse out of the depths.

Now he's depressed and just looking for a way to die the way he should have. Any players have a nutty PC up for a crazy adventure somewhere in TSM ? I mean where there's little chance of survival?

Let's have some fun

This is pretty much how I play all my PCs Sci, so sure, my elf on TSM would be glad to meet up with Olin to hunt down some giants or something. In fact I think he has a static that requires just that, lets do it tonight. If they die, I'll even roll a new PC on TSM or wherever with you.

But I don't consider this "nutty." Rather I like to think it is playing "heroic" which is ironic given your original post.

Don't let uber high level PCs get you down though. There are plenty of lower level PCs around to play with if that is what you are interested in. DD and ISA just rolled new toons on MS. Maybe we can bring Fjor and Shank over there for some island hopping fun.

Agree, FR is the wrong setting for me.

Kind of disagree that D&D is the "wrong game" for me. I just think I'm old school, compared to most here. I grew up with D&D in the early 1980's. I never remember any of our characters becoming infinitely powerful and influencial Victoria's Secret models with angel wings.

Well, entirely different things to say if the issue is that the most powerful character on ALFA is a woman. Is the problem really that we have a character that is a woman with angel wings and not a draconic muscle builder dude?

But have, like, you played 2e D&D? Literally every player character is a Greek hero capable of superhuman feats. You're either Hercules, Merlin, or some other fantasy-themed super hero. I can't speak for 1e or 4e D&D, but as far as I've seen D&D is absolutely about powerful, influential characters as soon as you break past level 3. If you want mundane characters with no special abilities, D&D is absolutely the wrong game for you.

Additionally (and this should be the main point) unless you are regularly playing with the victorias secret flying model...what does it matter? How does that person existing (who is still far below the power level of people like Elminster of Blackstaff) affect how you play the game and what enjoyment you get from it?

These types of characters exist in the realms and often enough show up in cities and towns. Its part and parcel of being in Faerun. Let it pass the moment they walk away and keep going with what you were doing.

You're right.

The next player character to cast a wizard spell will be removed from the game; magic is super-hero not real.
The next player character who uses a bard song to improve any character's skills or fighting power will be removed from the game; songs don't make you pick locks better, nor do they make you more accurate in battle.
The next player character that prays for divine spells, casts a divine spell, or even invokes the name of any deity will be removed from the game; there is only one true god and that is Ao and he doesn't care about anyone.
The next player character that survives a fire in a confined space will be removed from the game; I don't care how fast you can dodge, you can't doge fire.
All uses of the rogue feats "Evasion" and "Improved Evasion" will result in immediate removal from the game; these feats defy reality.

As a matter of fact, the entire 3.5 edition system is stupid and so is NWN2. All of ALFA needs to end right now.

Enough is enough. Sci, really dude, not productive. Proactivitiy, not reactivity mate. People will play what they play, quit worrying about what they're doin, and get some focus on what you're doin. Not happy, switch it up, man. You're a good player, have always enjoyed the rp. Lay off the persecution and hate of certain players, and let them have what they have. No one has said you HAVE to buy into it (though it has certainly been suggested offhandedly, even that suggestion is ultimately incorrect.) Don't make me remind you the definition of insanity.... :D
