ALFA Downtime ?

Post by Hialmar »

On the 8th of December, the server (which manages the forums, website, central database and the vault) rented with the donations will cease to be ours.

I know that Foam has made some testings for a new server but I have no idea how he plans the transition.

Therefore I prefer to warn everyone around that you may see a downtime around this date.

What I will do :
- I will backup everything before this date finishing with the vault and the database so that when the server will restart we loose as less data as possible ;
- I will upload everything on a new server IF someone gives me the infos and right to do this ;
- I can direct the domain name I own (alandfaraway.info) to the new server ;
- I can try to contact Murky (who owns alandfaraway.org) so that he can direct the domain name to the new server. This last part can take some time so do not be worried if alandfaraway.org doesn't answer for some time.

Downtime is expected to occur sometime next week. We have our Azure server all set up, just need to sync it and make sure we have everything.

I've already contacted Murky, but had completely forgotten about alandfaraway.info. I'll PM you DNS info later.

Just wondered how smooth a transition and how much downtime is now expected if any?

Just a reminder that we loose the server on Monday.

Yes that is in 3 (three) days.

In how many days?
pragmatic (adj.)
The opposite of idealistic is pragmatic, a word that describes a philosophy of "doing what works best."
From Greek pragma "deed," the word has historically described philosophers and politicians who were
concerned more with real-world application of ideas than with abstract notions. A pragmatic person
is sensible, grounded, and practical.

Downtime will depend on some factors beyond our control, such as updating DNS records. We don't have control over alandfaraway.org, and if we did, it will take a while.

The switch should start some time after Zelknolf's campaign ends tonight.
