MS has a new host

Post by Castano »

First, thank you to AcadiusLost for not only hosting MS for so many years since its live date, but also for building the box it was hosted on. I can't thank you enough for putting up with my noobishness and the IMs while you were at work. Since Acadius could no longer host MS we moved the server to a virtual machine running on my desktop computer at my house in New Jersey. So far it appears to be running fine and not impacting the rest of my computing.

Second, please thank Foam for spending 5+ hours setting up the server. Considering I lack the ability to set up a server, we would have been hostless while I spent the next month figuring it out.

The benefits of doing this:

(1) Environmental - because we made use of existing hardware on a machine that would be up and running 24/7 anyway, we are not using as much power - also we do not create more e-waste and energy consumption to manufacture a new server box. Someone else can figure out the carbon offset and give us an award. Also for those who care most of the power used by the server is produced by solar power.

(2) Costs - Because we are using less power than a stand alone server, this reduces the cost to our host in terms of electricity and in having to buy a machine.

(3) Labor - Since the host box is brand new it will likely not be replaced/upgraded for the next 5 years or so. So we won't have to go through server setup again in the foreseeable future.

(4) Further hosting: Potential to setup additional virtual machines after validating this model, allowing use to host more stuff. Also the ability to us this VM for other projects tech/infra may need.

Current Data:

Running the VM with a DM logged in and with some programs running on the main machine is currently using 23% CPU and 11.3 of 16 GB RAM.

Server response time claims to be 10 milliseconds.
