Stop Hating on the Tavern RP

To tavern or not to tavern... this thread confirms my suspicions that the creative juices aren't flowing quite the way they used to. ALFA formerly always had shyte going down whether in tavern or out in the wilds or in someone's chamberpot.

Nothing wrong with tavern RP. Or campfire RP. Like any good PnP session, it was a great way to get people together. We could all talk, swap stories, swap lies, and catch up with everyone. ALFA's pub life was fairly unique in my experience in gaming, as it was a great RP atmosphere. When you talk that much, its a great time for character building. That we could sustain it for so long without complaint is a tribute to the people here; sometimes a DM was an unwelcome interruption in a good conversation. More often though, they sparked things even more with an interesting NPC or an occasional crisis. A lot of that character building has been used in a play by post email I have been running on Giant in the Playground for the last 2-3 years, for context if nothing else, as I DM there.

So yeah, don't hate on tavern RP. It's important. It's everyone's responsability to keep it going, because it helped keep ALFA going. Obviously, haven't been involved in NWN2 ALFA, but I assume the same holds true. Made a lot of good friends over a drink, or a campfire!

Does anyone remember the Wind Walkers (I think that was the name) it was a player run initiative at first to cross all of the servers and in the end it turned in a huge draw from DM's.

The player(s) created a situation that just drew DM's like a moth to a flame, I believe it was a scenario like such that people have been driving at.

To me you are discussing two different styles/techinques for RP, one is Theater RP which is planned out before hand, everyone has roles etc as the DM has prepped everything it is more like putting on a production without pre-scripted dialogue.

The other one is the Improv RP which is much harder to do alone, for improv to work well you need active people throwing out hooks and ideas, it works much better with an active group getting the juices running.

I am just glad Tavern RP keeps ALFA alive for on oldie like me to come back home to, thanks to everyone!!

If you ask me, most of this tavern RP could simply be done in IRC, or private tells. Honestly, we should be having adventures and the like, not gossiping about who likes who. If someone says that this is the great thing about ALFA, than I think something is really really wrong.

Tavern RP is a vital part of any PW, but when there is nothing but Tavern RP players lose interest. Unless it's cyber.

Any DM who can't come up with a way to create a plot for players in the tavern shouldn't be a DM. That said players who get off their asses and do something often get much love from any decent DM.
