Sometimes, it's always a long walk.

Image"It's Wil." Her first meeting with Wil Kneesplitter, would not be the last time she heard the correction, and the memory made her smile slightly as she trudged Westward along the Lion's Way to the coastline. She had opted to dress only in her comfortable robes of service, rather than her armors, for the trek. She did not fear her safety, as she was accompanied by a few heading the same way for one reason or another. Her reason, was to spend some days in quiet mourning for one she considered a friend. One who she had discovered, upon return to Ruqel, had fallen in battle with some beast.
She knew that death was part of life. A cycle she had seen many times before, and comforted several with words she felt Selune delivered to those mourning by her own simple words, or just presence. The thoughts brought another faint smile as she recalled Wil's indifference if not outright scorn to those who served their gods. The comments and discussions on the matter. She always wondered what Wil thought as he witnessed or felt the touch of the Moonmaiden's blessings through her hands. She wondered if she had chosen wisely to not argue with him when he made dismissive comments, but chose rather to accept him for who he was, and still lift him before her goddess in her own prayers. She hoped he knew, ...somehow.

In the distance, Candlekeep could be seen in the early morning light. They were close now, and the thought of mourning in earnest brought fresh tears to her eyes. "I will miss you, William" She thought somberly.
"It's Wil."

Dori stopped before the bier and pulled his hood back. He and looked at the silent form, once lively, now still. The clerics had done a good job of patching him up but signs of the violence that had taken his friend's life could be read in discoloured gashes and limbs not set quite right.

"Kneesplitter." Dori shook his head slowly, sadly. "Ye sure earned that name, but they could just as well called ye Sidesplitter", he thought to himself, remembering the dry wit that had been Wil's trademark. "Ye seemed ta be out fer yerself first but somehow ye were always there when one needed ye, axe an' blade at tha ready." He remembered climbing the Frost hills in the Silver Marches together, battling undead in the ravines, and the gigantic spider they slew on the Lion's way but a few moons back. That would have been a close one but for Wil's unwavering courage. One more companion fallen on the road, yet another traveller that Dori had failed to protect, although tasked to do so by Marthammor Duin. Well, there was not much left for him in the Sword Coast now. Word from home told of waves of undead increasing rather than abating. Maybe it was now time to return to Felbarr and give his report to the Volamtar.

As he prepared to take farewell of his former companion, he looked up and saw that Lili was standing in the shadows, too. Their eyes met and he nodded somberly to her. Dori cast one last look at Wil Kneesplitter and turned to leave. It was probably just a play of light but he thought he noticed a hint of a sardonic smile on the pale face.
