Papa, papa, I wanna go to the circus again! I told all my friends about the show last night. Flying ponies and mens with wings! I was all scared at the end when the fire 'splosions went up into the sky, but then the man with the whip made the 'splosions spell out "Shows Over!" and started juggling little bitty fireballs and everybody laughed, even you, and it was all better. I wanna go again! Can we, huh, can we?

"Oh, yes, I've invested. A cable ferry to Everlund seems just to ticket to increase my bottom line." Chuckles. "What? No? Not yet. Of course I've viewed the plans! But it's the middle of the bloody wilderness. You don't just snap your fingers and *poof* a ferry appears! Well, not unless you're the Lady herself. For the rest of us, there's the parts where it all gets built. That'll take some time, but I'm in on the ground floor, I tell you. I'm going to make my fortune off this new Griffon Caravan venture. Mark my words."

At the Hammer & Helm in Silverymoon:

*A loud dwarf spits aside a thick wad of chewspittle, ringing the spitoon. He finishes his ale, wipes the spillage from his beard and continues his talking ... *

The Mythal I sayin'! Ye know ... the magik shield thingy s'posed be all 'round the City! It be broked!

Look 'ere, ye stuffheaded stubble beard! *he directs his rant towards a skeptical younger dwarf across the table* I know what what I seen ... twice now! There were that time I seen the fireball down at the docks.

*squints his eyes angrily* That longlegger spellguard telled me I been tricked by an illusion .... but others seen it too .... and the ash and smoke that followed.

And now old Thorgill Orebristle been taken by an evil spirit here in the City! Alyra Ironbeard says the mythal s'posed to keep that out too! But it didn't! 'Cause it broked!!

the dwarf, admittedly drunk and admittedly knowing less about magic than a pack mule, remains steadfast to his claim. He continues with the rant until the wee hours of the morning, despite being shouted down by most of his kin in the tavern

*Rumours begin to spread of uncontrolled breeding of goblinoids in the distant reaches of the North. Travelers report seeing more goblins near trade routes and riskier and more bold than is usual.*

*The rumours increase in intensity. There are now claims that a host of goblinoids has swept out of the North and the Spine of the World Mountains. The dwarves have abandoned hold fasts north of Rivermoot and lost several on the way. They say the mountain passes are blocked to the west as a filthy evil host spreads wanton destruction.*

(( Do not attempt this alone. Too many goblins to count/calculate difficulty. ))

Soldiers and militia march on the highways, up from the west and down from the east, converging on a field near Rauvenwatch. The tents spring up like mushrooms after a rain and the lights of campfires light the muddy paths of what grows to be a sizable encampment. It is a muster, with troops sent from near and far in Luruar.

At first, none of the rank and file seem to know the purpose of this gathering of soldiery, but slowly, rumor begins to spread that it is a not a war camp but a levy of aid for some situation in Sundabar. The far eastern city beyond Silverymoon Pass in the Nether Mountains is evacuating its citizenry. Troops ply the highway up into the Nether Mountains, escorting women and children, refugees and evacuees, against the dangers of the road. Sundabarans with family or places to go elsewhere in the Marches are escorted back onto the road to those places of safety by some of the soldiers they have sent, and the rest of the muster are set to building camps. Many Sundabarans find beds in Silverymoon, or tents in makeshift refugee camps outside the walls.

It does not take long after the first arrival of wide-eyed, exhausted refugees for word to spread. They do not flee orc, or any foe that can be fought by the gathering soldiery. The innocent and helpless of Sundabar have been sent out of those high surrounding walls for something much worse, something more destructive. Beneath the city of Sundabar lies a volcano, the Everfire, and the Everfire is rumbling.....

And still the soldiers gather.

With the muster of troops at Rauvinwatch looking to the north-east, and the Legions attention to defences at Rivermoot in fear of the goblin scourge to the north, militia are stretched and unable to do little more than guard the walls.

A loose company of adventurers has been seen in several places in the vale pacifying the lands near settlements where the reduced patrols have given rise to incursions of threats unable to be met by the distracted Legion.

Rivermoot foothills hills and farmlands have been secured, encroachment of lizardmen and trolls from the Evermoors and subjugation of emboldened orc and gnolls from caverns near Highold, and even the defeat of haunting ghosts on the Silverwood pathways have given locals some relief.

But with little problems gone, eyes turn to the north, and the concern grows...

An elderly fellow, looking out of place girded for battle and darker complected than the locals, makes claim in Rivermoot's square that the overwatch near Fourthpeak is without defenders. "This one is aware," he ventures, "that your Legion folk or other warriors ought sit sentry there. Yet in my own trekking, paths crossed with a warband of batiri-kin rather than men ready to share fire and food. They were not suffered to live, but what fate the original defenders, this one cannot say. That overwatch is anyone's for the taking right now, as I chose bear word back here rather than stand lone vigil."

"Aye. The Fourth Peak be o'errun. We came up wit' a a few blades an' were able to kill off the three score or so goblins an' shagshamans that held it.

The horde be so many though, Unless there be a phalanx o' men to hold the ground again they jus' gonna keep comin' back.

We found one o' Bruenor's Mithril Hall guard felled by a number of arrows. As for the rest o' the Gutbusters an' Hrafen Jye an' that orcblood she seem so fond of?

*the dwarf shakes his head*

I be prayin' the All-Father found 'em safe to Mithril Hall or Dwarvendharrow. Ifn they be captured or stuck out in the wilds among the horde ....

*he shakes his head again and trails off with a frown*

As more and more refugees from Sundabar arrive in Silverymoon, their tales grow more strange and grim.

Perhaps it is just the strain of long travel and deprivation, but more than one of the weary travelers tell a tale of blazing "fire devils" appearing out of the ether and shooting forth spheres of flame that engulf and consume everything they contact.

Nathaniel and other Legionaries on guard watched a group of adventurers return to Rivermoot from the Fouthpeak passes battered, weary, bloodstained but reporting to Sgt Wilson that an orc leader of the goblins had been defeated. They were not sure if this was THE leader or not. After a misunderstanding, in which Wilson was most insistent, they also handed over something found on the mission.

Nathaniel requests orders from Silverymoon about if he, and the small irregular company he is part of, should continue to survey the passes to the north-west, or return to the east to lend a hand against the increasing threat from beneath Sundubar.

Sgt Wilson continues to send scouting parties into the hills to reconnoiter the goblin and bugbear trouble up there. Although he concedes that some valiant efforts by irregulars have brought some success to the push to clear the infestation , the crisis is far from over.

A group of irregular Argent Militia dragged three dead legionnaires into Rivermoot on a makeshift litter and presented them to Sgt. Wilson. Bystanders were somewhat shocked at Sgt. Wilson's display of unfettered anger at the murders and overheard him loudly threaten the hideous, but helpful half orken John Walker with a flogging at one point. Tempers did seem to cool and after more discussion with the irregulars, Sgt. Wilson was later seen supervising the washing of the bodies of the fallen soldiers and subsequent presentations to the grieving families at the Kelemvor vault.

Grim tidings, renewed. The wanderer Bamshogbo shares word with Wilson of Rivermoot that a day's march North through the Frost Hills, a man in Legion livery seems to have suffered either fall or an ignominious dumping from a height. A physical description is provided. In either case, the man is with his ancestors, though his remains are laying by the shore of an ice-cold tarn. Those with better rope wisdom or means to move themselves, much less an armored man through such waters, may yet redeem his leavings from the crows. Neither of these paths were open to Bamshogbo, for which apology is made to the local command.

Additionally, tribal squatters at the Fourthpeak overwatch were laid low. Bamshogbo reports the number of maurauders was greater, their resolve stiffened by a couple of larger batiri-kin, and they seemed to have been amassing a store of plunder. It may be that less fortunate hireblades and fortune-seekers plying the passes make their names, met cruel fates instead.

((OOC - (1) a corpse labelled "Gustavson" had no body-token etc. to move. (2) I thought the "mini-fort" was just a dense clump of infestation, bad feeling I actually stomped a DM pre-set.))
