Wow...dead...goblins and goblin shamans are bad arses! got to say..how does anyway feel inclined towards rolling up another pc after getting invested in the one they only just killed a moment ago..was about to write a story too...oh well..Ill get over it...curious though...between RL and the time we do have for our little moments of play..seems a waste....reminding myself its only a game at the moment Now to the next guy..ranger druid worked for me until i picked the wrong fight..tracking sneaking etc is handy..though may get dull if doing the same thing..writing out loud

Another solo death? Ouch.
Good luck with the next. Remember to play safe.

I doubt anyone person here has a firm grasp on how many potentially nice concepts have been lost at Lvl 1-2.klandearlas wrote:Wow...dead...goblins and goblin shamans are bad arses! got to say..how does anyway feel inclined towards rolling up another pc after getting invested in the one they only just killed a moment ago..was about to write a story too...oh well..Ill get over it...curious though...between RL and the time we do have for our little moments of play..seems a waste....reminding myself its only a game at the moment Now to the next guy..ranger druid worked for me until i picked the wrong fight..tracking sneaking etc is handy..though may get dull if doing the same thing..writing out loud
Lengthy and often heated discussions have taken place in the recent past about survivability at the low levels, even the occasional poll. Some like the sense of accomplishment of having made it out of the low levels whereas others, myself included, consider the low levels for most character classes to be a debatably unnecessary barrier between you and the good stuff that ALFA really has to offer. Currently the status quo is something of a purist position re low level survivability and there are no signs of that changing in the near future. It’s not the end of the world though as there are ways to maximise your survivability:-
- Never travel alone. This is a rule one should adhere to at any reasonable level.
- Grind the statics as it won’t take long to pull yourself up to Lvl 3 by doing this. Where a static presents danger, do it with someone else. (Some people will probably complain that grinding the statics goes against ALFA’s sense of fair play, but the low levels aren’t fair either.)
- Tag along with the nearest DM’d event that you can find; do not feel put off joining in just because you are low level. Chances are good that the attendant DM will be lenient on low level PCs (we’ve all been there – some have a season ticket) and the DM XP awards will very rapidly have you climbing out of Low Level Hell.
- Don’t write a bio until your character has reached Lvl3. If you are wedded to a particular concept, and no-one has seen a bio, no harm done if your next character is able to slot into that concept should they make it to Lvl3.
Some of the above suggestions may be frowned upon by some as being somewhat gamey but getting out of Low Level Hell is far more of a headache than it should be, so fight metafire with metafire, I say!
Re: Another new face
I would not recommend burning through static quests or combat myself, as that could easily lead to a rules violation type behavior.
I have to sigh at times at people whom feel that low levels are the dregs, that they have to be higher level to have any fun. To me, the fun IS the low level, heart in throat not knowing if one will survive the next turn. Death happens, it's not the end of the world. And it certainly isn't a waist, as you get experience playing in ALFA so that your next toon might be a bit better off than the previous. I still scratch my head at the people whom insist low levels aren't fun...to me that is likely the best of times.
Otherwise, the above info is good stuff to go by, buddy up with others, try not to solo, try to get involved in dmed stuff.

<Castano>: danielnm - can you blame them?
<danielmn>: Yes,
<danielmn>: Easily.

Re: Another new face
A '1-in-20' chance per round of death against goats for some classes is as ludicrous as it is hilarious, and it is a pointless waste of effort to lose characters who haven't even had chance to get off the starting blocks; only at Lvl3 does a character start to develop a mechanical sense of purpose and the sweet spot, in so far as the way that ALFA is set up today, probably goes on to being within the Lvl6-8 range. (Exceed Lvl10 and you're arguably all but invulnerable in ALFA - I wouldn't be surprised if more high level PCs get retired out of boredom than are lost to any other means.)danielmn wrote:I have to sigh at times at people whom feel that low levels are the dregs, that they have to be higher level to have any fun.
None of this is ALFA's fault per sé, it's the flawed DnD mechanics, and as ALFA (obviously) uses the DnD mechanics none of this should come as being any great surprise. In actual fact ALFA is pretty fluffy compared to vanilla DnD at starting levels!
That all being said, there is a very simple dodge to this systemic weakness and it is one repeated mantra-like to all newcomers: never start a fight alone so that you have a fighting chance of being saved by your pal c/o the bleed-out mechanic because you will be laid out more frequently than a cheap whore on 2-for-1 night.

Re: Another new face
Thanks all
I have no intention to hit the statics just to get back to level 3...hmmm...should have used entangle and got the hell out when surrounded by critical hitting gobbos and a bloody shaman...live and learn...
Only really do statics if on alone and not rping with a player. Statics are good for the exploring part in any case and IC there are some i will do ie being a druid of mielikki for the cleric of mielikki and others i wont..such as kill a boar for sport or its tusks or whatever..not very mielikkish...anyway back to the drawing board
Thanks again

Statics, with exclusion of mail running, are designed for parties. Doing them yourself while alone on the server is a quick road to dead.
