To Griffen and any other new players:

Following up on what JLM and others have suggested, I found that using the statics as a jump off point to strike up a conversation with other PC's inevitably leads to inclusion in RP. It is perfectly believable and IC for someone new to a town or area who has just received a work assignment to seek help, directions, information about the area, dangers etc. before setting out to kill that kobold hiding in the bushes =). Indeed, the statics are meant to be RP'd with others in just this way as a means of meeting people, forming relationships etc. I find that if you make the initial overture -- even with just an emote directed at another player -- most players in ALFA will respond and interact with you. Once you have had a few conversations and/or done a few statics with people you will find yourself involved in DMd events before long.

For my part, any player looking for RP please feel free to shoot me a PM or tell anytime, or approach my toon IC -- careful though, I'm told he's a little creepy =P

Once I get my toon back to RM, expect Lem to be visible and available. His being the commander of a highly motivated militaristic faction based in Rivermoot is more than enough reason for him to wish to aid others in staying alive, so feel free to approach him or any others wearing the Helmite Forces cloak, platemail & shield.

Looking forward to meeting you, sometime, griffen, and any other newcomers in need of tutelage and guidance.

Rather be a dick than something my own mother would beat to a pulp with a stick, if she hadn't passed out from the horror of what she'd spawned in the first place. Beauty is only skin deep, ugly and stupid are clear to the bone.

Thanks for everyone's input and welcome to any new players reading this thread.

My only advice is don't get too frustrated if you're struggling to get involved. More often than not, it's just not practical or realistic to invite a stranger along on an adventure where sensitive information is being obtained and/or revealed.

It's going to vary situationally, of course. Not every PC outing is a super-secret mission with life and death consequences. Those happen, certainly, but with a bit of patience, you should be able to start making some in-character ties with other characters. And some PCs are just going to be suspicious of everyone all the time anyhow... so don't take it personally.

The best advice for a new PC is not to adventure alone! The whole "new face in town" caution starts all over again every time you get stuck re-rolling due to a PC death. Better to have a few dull nights around town and build up some in-character familiarity with other PCs than to be on with a new character every night due to boredom-soloing.

It is all a bit intimidating and scary to venture out when you are new to a server. As a new player to the server, I found that when I came across another player in town or even on the road, I simply asked if they had "any news?" It's a very realistic question of fellow travelers and a great chance for more experienced PCs to 1) point out and offer advice on some local statics (very thoughtfully provided all over the server :D ), or better yet, 2) to fill you in on current plots and their back story. Most PCs are happy to get the chance to RP and even help a n00bie out if time permits. Hopefully this way when a DM does pluck you up, you have a general idea of current events. ;) Best advice offered so far was never to adventure alone, but if you can get the details on a static, you'll be in a much better position to tackle it with someone you run across later on, then if you went in blind. My luck hasn't been great with DM time yet (I think I'm active on their down days/time) but with a partner and some good role play, a simple static can make for a real fun evening.
