Also there is a point that every deity´s power is related to the number/fervor of his/her followers.

Some deities have risen from mortals even.
Some fiends grant spells.

I don´t see it being over-the-top for some mortals bargaining for spells with natural/un-natural forces of the land. After all it´s quite same as having fiends as patron. Fey and such might be more fickle, but if a SS or his/her tribe worship one enough it can achieve a demi- or semigod stature.

(example: Zutam the para-elemental worshiped by a tribe of frost giants in Prince of Lies)

OR we can treat the class freely as a shaman that deals with spirits. Deity is not necessarily relevant here, but might be if desired.

I'd say that a spirit shaman does not need a god for spells. Look at Gann in the motb campaign. He was faithless and was going to go to the wall if he died, but was an epic level spirit shaman. True, some allowances must be given to gameplay, and while computer game's are not cannon in wotc, it none the less gives us something to base off of.

Spirit shamans from what I've read, sound a lot like the wise women and cunning men of Europe. Though, this relationship as has has been pointed out in previous posts is not limited to any particular region of the world. All cultures have needed intermediaries between themselves and the otherworld that were outside regional religious structures.

In Ireland a good example would be Biddy early of County Clare
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biddy_Early

Essentially, a spirit Shaman is a normal person on their own or who due to contact from the Otherworld becomes an intermediary between the spirits and the local community.

This is not a religious so much as a working relationship.

The Spirits of whatever type may be getting specified benefits in their working agreement or may have ulterior motives over and above what has been stated to the worker.

As i understand it too, this does not preclude one from being a religious person outside of the relationship that person has with the spirit world.

Though that does not mean a spirit shaman will be unable to earn status in that other realm where he/she draws power via their patron or patrons.

Something I came across while researching for a new character (yep I died again). Its about the call of nature - specifically a mountain in this person's case. At least from an elemental spirit shaman's POV this could be useful material to develop a character...
