Cleric Domains for NWN2-ALFA (Full listing)

Post by AcadiusLost »

Nothing like a deadline to spur work on. These are somewhat tentative, but should provide a good guideline for rolling a cleric in ALFA Live. We've assembled a list of three to five domains per diety for all those listed in Faiths and Pantheons. For the Greater and Other dieties, the (*) denotes non-canon domains, added to fill out the lists or to substitute for unavailable domains. Thanks to Rusty for doing the nonhuman dieties as well.

I get that undeath was only added to the list to replace a canon domain, but why undeath? Kelemvor clergy and paladins have all the thing about destroying undead and necromancers after all.
Faiths and Pantheons wrote: Clerics of Kelemvor consider all undead abominations and do whatever they can to put them to eternal rest. They contend that those who create undead are fit only for swift and utter destruction (an important difference between the kelemvorite clergy and that of Jergal, who hold that certain undead have their uses). Kelemvorite clergy sometimes declare crusades against the undead or against creatures deemed to have caused too much untimely death.
The undeath domain grants you extra turning and necromantic spells (animate dead and create greater undead). Wouldn't it be better to replace this with something else, other than give PCs domains spells they should never ever use? Clerics of Jergal I can see using this, but not Kelemvor.
Current PC: Gareth Darkriver, errant knight of Kelemvor

I agree, those spells are completely innappropriate for a cleric of Kelemvor. However, the level 1 bonus from the Domain is Bonus Feat: Extra Turning, which is quite well suited for Kelemvor, much more so than the "Summon Shadow" bonus from the Death Domain. Are Phantasmal Killer as a 4th level spell and Power Word Kill as a 9th level one more appropriate than Animate Dead at 2nd and Create Greater Undead at 7th? Quite possibly, but at least Undeath offers a usable bonus from 1st level all the way along, wheras with Death you'd be looking at having to wait till 7th level to even be able to use one of your domain abilities.

If we could mix and match the two, we could certainly come up with a lot better. The alternative would be giving them no death-related domains whatsoever, which to my mind is considerably worse from a thematic point of view.

Certainly, we could look into domain re-balances of the sort we did for NWN1-ALFA, but being involved tangentally with that effort last time, I can safely say, it was a lot of work, and a ton of the "but # totally unbalances @! No way, because # is absolutely gimped! (etc)" arguments that I've little taste or patience for. If some of you have a passion for that sort of thing, you're welcome to start the process.

In the meantime, I maintain that Undeath is more appropriate (if only marginally so) than Death, for a Kelemvor domain.

Abbathor is listed as having the Dream and Darkness domains but not with Luck. Canon has his domains as Luck, Trickery and Evil all of which appear in NWN2. So why take out a domain that he really has and replace it with one that makes no sense (dream) and one that he just doesn't have (darkness)?

It also appears that Erevan is missing his Luck domain (again canon and in NWN2) and is replaced with Dream.

that this is part of the Wiki now i think means this should be removed as a sticky. Either that, or relocated to the new players section.

You know, i am unable to find this anywhere on the Wiki... but i also noticed there are two things missing with this list -- favored weapon and alignments. Knowing the diety's favored weapon is important if the priest has the war domain. Knowing the alignments, as well, is critical.

I put it on the Player Documentation page (accessed directly from the Wiki>Player menu above). It's under:

4. RP Guides and FAQs
[...]
NWN2 Specific
[...]
NWN2 Cleric Domains

I put links on each of the gods, but some of the spelling seems to be off because not all the links work.

Favoured weapons are on their respective god pages.

Don't worry, I did all that at the end of June. ;) Except for the favoured weapons and acceptable cleric alignments, all the god relevant information had already been set up.
