Underdark areas under Cormanthor
Underdark areas under Cormanthor
Hello - I see mention of many passages into the Underdark throughout Cormanthor, but are there any canon Underdark areas or cities directly below Cormanthor. And how about maps?
Thanks guys,
Aelred

I believe our NWN2 underdark server may be building szith morcane which is under the dalelands. I did a quick google search and found this ALFA image lol:

Also, there is the FR Underdark sourcebook that has some maps and info that I can look into if you want. I'd recommend chatting with Inaubryn first to see what areas they are using as I think it is nearby.

Thanks Heegz - Inaubryn's server proposal talks only about Eryndlyn which is under the High Moor.
It's just that I keep seeing connections to the Underdark mentioned left and right in relation to most Cormanthor areas. For example, under some of the ghost holds and the Abbey of the Sword, the Twisted Tower in Shadowdale, and the dwarves Glen, also around Myth Drannor and the elven court, just to name a few. Since there are so many entry/exit points I was hoping to find some documented stuff, especially maps for Underdark areas right below Cormanthor.
I'll head to Paizo and pick up the three 2nd edition drow books in PDF.
AD&D Forgotten Realms FOR2: The Drow of the Underdark
AD&D Forgotten Realms: Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark
AD&D Forgotten Realms: Menzoberranzan

Ok - found a map in the Drizzt Guide - it shows
1. Zanhoriloch (in Lake Thoroot) under Battledale,
2. Lake of Shadows under Daggerdale
3. Maerimydra just under the area between Voonlar and the River Tesh

Zanhoriloch (Small City, 6,000): This strange dwarven city rests on an island in the Underdark's Lake Thoroot. Zanhoriloch was originally built by drow, who in the Year of the Last Hunt (722 DR) launched an attack on the western dwarven city of Kanaglym through a portal. The dwarves surprised the drow with the strength of their resistance and forced the dark elves to retreat, following them back through the portal, where the dwarves sacked the unprepared city and turned the lake red with drow blood.
Stranded in an unknown location by the closing portal, the dwarves settled in the city, reworking its architecture to suit them and their faith. Though they were slow to learn boating, the dwarves of Zanhoriloch (usually called Mhorilot, meaning "dark surface," by its inhabitants) are comfortable on the water and keep their city self-sufficient by fishing and kelp farming. They have small mining expeditions on the near shore and possess wealth of silver, gold, and iron. Having spent several centuries avoiding the elves of Cormanthor, the dwarves recently emerged from a small tunnel leading to Battledale, with whom they now trade weapons and precious metals for grain, beef, and wood.
Maerimydra is detailed in City of the Spider Queen and the War of the Spider Queen novels.
Here is an interesting quote from the
City of the Spider Queen Web enhancement (p9)
Cormanthor - The "spider-kisser" drow of Cormanthor are a relatively weak faction among the surface dwelling dark elves who loot the ruins of the ancient elven realm. Lolth's silence, naturally, has made them even weaker. Maby of the "spider-kissers" are natives of Maerimydra; some are considering a return to that city to oust the upstart invaders. There are no followers of Kiaransalee among the drow of Cormanthor.

Well I sprung $$$ for the City of the Spider Queen from RPGNow - well worth it for all the info it has not to mention the awesome maps!
(p20) The drow settlement of Szith Morcane has lain beneath the Dordrien Crypts (10 miles south of Dagger Falls) for centuries. Founded in 804 DR as an outpost of Maerimydra when that city also ruled Shadowdale, Szith Morcane served as a supply station for drow operating on the surface and a staging point for occasional raids into Daggerdale. With the flight of the drow from Shadowdale, the inhabitants of Szith Morcane lost interest in the surface world until the recent arrival of refugees from Maerimydra.
City of the Spider Queen places Maerimydra 20 miles south (and 7 miles down) of Ashabenford. The City of the Spider Queen, obviously a more recent source book than 2nd edition Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark means we will have to ignore his location of Maerimydra on the previous map and follow what is written in the City of the Spider Queen.
(p45) Maerimydra lies roughly 20 miles south of Ashabenford in Mistledale, and several miles below it....underground connections exist between Old Skull and Maerimydra. The lord of Shadowdale sealed off the Underdark connections under Old Skull after the incidents of 1367 DR, but other entrances to this complex of caverns and tunnels are thought to exist somewhere near the Elven Court in Cormanthor and beneath the hill of Hap in Battledale....
At the time of the most recent encounters with drow near Shadowdale, the dark elves were buying or capturing dwarven slaves in the Moonsea region and ferrying them along a subterranean river to the caverns under Old Skull...the drow purchased the dwarven slaves from duergar in the Underdark near Zhentil Keep. The duergar, in turn, had tunnels connecting their domain to the sewers under the keep....
In summary, there are exactly four entrances into the Underdark in the vicinity of Maerimydra: one beneath the Dordrien Crypts, one near the Elven Court, one under Hap Hill in Battledale, and one in the sewers of Zhentil Keep...(this last entrance) involves passing through both Zhentil Keep and a thriving duergar community.
(p50) The Lake of Shadows is a large body of fresh water located beneath the Dagger Hills in the extreme northwest of Cormanthor. Its dark water is the domain of a kraken, which rules the lake as an iron-fisted tyrant. The kraken’s subjects include a small group of kuo-toas dwelling in the western portion of the lake and a brood of aboleths in the eastern portion.

"The God of the Qurʾan is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." -- Vaelahr
Yep. When last I spoke with Inaubryn he said the only UD location that was possible in the current toolset was Szith and that they were going to start building there. If the MD team is planning on building it now should probably ask the DMA which team should be doing it.Aelred wrote:Thanks Heegz - Inaubryn's server proposal talks only about Eryndlyn which is under the High Moor.
Page 161 in Faiths and Pantheons has the map of the UD area under the Abbey. Last I knew Rick was building this so you might chat with him. Can provide an image if you don't have this sourcebook.Aelred wrote:I keep seeing connections to the Underdark mentioned left and right in relation to most Cormanthor areas. If you are interested I can PM you with info on how to get the pdfs for free if you need them. Also I can make JPEGs of maps out of most of the sourcebooks as needed if you want.Aelred wrote:Well I sprung $$$ for the City of the Spider Queen from RPGNow - well worth it for all the info it has not to mention the awesome maps!

There's too much text to type out the descriptions but gives you a basic idea for these two areas. I've got to run, but I'll check this thread later when I get some free time.
COOL Heegz - Thanks for the info!!!
I should have stated at the start that I was only asking out of personal curiousity! I wasn't asking on behalf of some plan for MD or any other server. I think that if any server eventually added underdark areas, it would stand to reason that they would be coordinated in some way with Inaubryn.
