Server Proposal: 004 Waterdeep

Post by boombrakh »

So, uhm. Hi.

I recently returned to ALFA and I am having a blast and is filled with inspiration and glee. I used to be the HDM of 004 Waterdeep and I really miss that place. I am setting builders, scripters and storytellers together to bring The City of Splendors to A Land Far Away.
I know that the player base could use some improving and it might not be the best time to increase the server population but I believe that I'll be able to stir the scandinavian beast enough to shake loose a few more players.

I've already secured a dedicated 100/100mb pipe for the server, which will be a monster in order to give the players a feeling of depth and immersion. This will be great and I was wondering where I go from here. I am going to do whatever I need in order to get this online and to be a sister flagship to the amazing TSM server.

It's great to be back!

There was a group of builders from the BGTSCC PW group who were going to take a stab at Waterdeep, but the website I have for them seems to have lapsed.

We have on the DMFTP the exteriors that indio did of the entire canon map of Waterdeep using YATT to generate the ground contours and layout the streets.

It's in NWN2/Modules/Waterdeep Inactive/alfa_wd_stage1.rar

There is also in the same directory:
- South Ward and Dock Ward (Sand's versions I suppose);
- a skeletton of the City of the Dead.

Oh and welcome back Boom ;)

*squee* My advice, check for prefabs areas/landscapes on the vault that will work for your uses (hakless) and download all the prefab placeables set ups you can. It will speed your processes extensively.

(can't edit my post so) Would you consider merging the Waterdeep project with Skullport and Faeyrl as ONE server?

I gave it some thoughts, but I think that just having the surface area of Waterdeep somewhat three times the size of the Baldurs Gate server and then get the sewers and some of Undermountain on that it's going to be hard to merge everything. (considering there is a limit on the mod size). But if it possible, I don't see why not :)

And all of you who are eager to see Waterdeep again, just you wait. There are such grand ideas for this I actually woke up today having dreamt about Waterdeep and a shitload of ideas. We are aiming for a visual and IC experience that will increase the immersion of the game.

The ambition is admirable but to be honest boom I think you ought to prune your intended build, Three times the size of BG exteriors plus all those inertiors plus all the temples, inns, houses, dungeons, etc you'd need...not sure if you've much experience of using the NWN2 toolset but its a very different monster to NWN1, the same goes for the server process.

Its your project but I'd rather see a workable live Waterdeep than another dead pipe dream :/

Ok, so here's the deal. I am going to start looking for interior designers (:P) pretty soon because the exterior will be done not long from now. That means that you can basically ask to build something in the lists below. The reason I do it this way is because I know how passionate I am about certain things and how impassionate I am about other. Another reason is to give people the satisfaction to say "I built that!". That is why I want to give the power of creativity to those who feel they really want to build something or the other to those who do.
Naturally, this won't be an open Free For All, which is why I'll run this by my development team and other consults.

Now, I am not interested in outsourcing all the work here, it's just like I said above; people who are passioned about something tends to do a better job at it. I am not saying that each and every one of the locations above is something i am impassioned about, it's just that I am a firm believer of collaborated work. We (you) are all hopefully going to play on Waterdeep and some of you really enjoy the toolset. Why not open the doors for you then? What I am offering here is only interiors, no scripting or designing of NPC's. If nobody was home, what would the place look like?

If you are interested, PM me and we'll talk. Also, I am basically always on the chat, so his me up there as well if you have questions. I am "boom".

This is going to be awesome!

My advice..don't get new builders and ask them for portfolios or erfs of their past submissions to see if it equal to your vision.

Also builders do NOT do everything. I, for example, am an environmental designer. I design things, npcs, and environments. I do not script. You will not find anyone in alfa who can do everything and not possibly loose their job in the processes.

What we have learned on MS.

1. All placables must be converted except those with walkmeshes that you wish to be used.

2. Large city areas MUST be converted to environmental objects and the doors mass set as static to prevent door removal. Bake, save, then reset all doors you want to use as non-static.

3. You must cut walkmesh for converted buildings.

4. Aspire to elegances and a neat appearance one would expect from a well-established city of Faerun. A 3000 year old city should not look like a ramshakle slum with rutty paths and bad shading.

5. All buildings and their roofs are tintable so again using mass select via the Area Contents you can mix it up a bit.

6. Cities have trees and organic features as well was water features.

7. Less is more in all things. It's better to have a smaller well detailed area than huge empty undecorated ones.

8. It's better to open with less areas and at least four working statics. Four working statics that are repeatable will serve your characters and server well for the duration.

9. Always always check the surface mesh before you bake. Always.

10.And there should always be a one cell buffer on the grid for any interior.

11. Finally don't rebuild the wheel. Its better to import all the items, triggers, and placeables from BG/TSM then making 1000 new things. You will go mad and the project will never get done.
